The Senior Plant Operator ensures the City's wastewater treatment plants comply with State permit requirements and coordinates a team of crewmen in making the City's wastewater safe. This is a safety sensitive and/or DOT position. As such, you will be required to participate in random drug testing at the city.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.


  • Conducts rounds of all wastewater facilities; check condition of pumps, chart recorders and KWH readings for proper operation and maintenance.
  • Assigns job duties to crewman daily and supervises their activities; works with crew on lawn maintenance.
  • Collect samples regarding state and federal data and prepares reports recording their findings.
  • Maintain tanks, basins, UV systems and blowers for proper operation of WW treatment facilities; Assist maintenance personnel with repairs and replacement of Wastewater equipment
  • Perform plant check, record data, run process control, analyze results for permit compliance and maintains records of all quantities of chemicals used and the amount of wastewater treated or pumped.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance (PM's) measures.
  • Subject to afterhours and weekend callouts
  • Subject to On-Call Schedule

SUPERVISON/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Directly supervise Plant Operators and Trainees.

Must be able to provide services for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations that threaten the safety of League City's citizens, and that, City employees must be able to work immediately before, during, or immediately after an emergency .

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • One to three years of experience in wastewater treatment and minor maintenance of motors and pumps or related field.
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Class "C" Wastewater Treatment Operator License issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) with the ability to obtain a Class "B" Wastewater Treatment Operator License within three (3) years of employment to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.

Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

  • Wastewater collection and treatment.
Skill in:
  • Operations, maintenance of pumps and motors, proper sampling techniques, and record keeping.
Ability to:
  • Work Saturdays/Sundays, holidays, during inclement weather, utility emergencies and public outreach events when required.
  • Prioritize and supervisor work assignments.
  • Detect variances and unusual conditions during routine observation of wastewater treatment operations and pumping equipment.
