Cherry Hospital, an accredited State Psychiatric Hospital serving the eastern region of North Carolina, is accepting applications for the Social Work Program Director position. This position is responsible for the administration, clinical and professional direction of the Social Work Department which includes 32 positions (Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers and Clinical Social Work Supervisors). Position is responsible for program development, supervisory assignment of staff and on-going planning for patient care delivery, integrative family involvement, discharge planning and coordination of service with community-based service agencies representing 38 counties of eastern North Carolina. The Social Work Program Director also has responsibility for development of policies and procedures for the Social Work Department; and assures the department remains compliant with the Hospital’s regulatory and accreditation requirements for active patient treatment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possess all of the following:


  • Thorough knowledge of current social work principles, theories, methodologies and protocols.
  • Thorough knowledge of techniques used in evaluating, assessing patients and families and developing appropriate treatment plans, placement and/or referrals.
  • Considerable knowledge of various disorders of medical, psychiatric, retardation and accompanying nature.
  • Considerable skill in planning, organizing and directing a comprehensive social work program.
  • Considerable knowledge of community agencies, resources and placement facilities.
  • Skill in clinical consultation to staff and other professionals.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working rapport with staff, associates, community agencies, patients and families.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Management Prefers: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in North Carolina

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of social work experience, including two years in an administrative or supervisory capacity;
or
Master s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution, and five years of social work experience, including two years in an administrative or supervisory capacity;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
