Department Overview Motorola Solutions is looking for a dynamic leader responsible for developing and maintaining a research facility at the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana campus. The role will manage an intern program to recruit full time resources into the company. Must possess a blend of business and technical skills.
Job Description
The Site Director is the Motorola Solutions “brand” on the U of I campus, promoting MSI at every opportunity. The position consists of three primary roles:
Site Director

Be the on-site recruiter for MSI at Research Park working in tandem with the University Relations lead. Work with University recruiting to plan, attend and follow-up on Research Park recruiting events.

Manage physical premises at Research Park, ensuring the best possible environment for students and staff.

Collaborate with key Registered Student Organizations like the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Women in Computer Science, and Society of Women Engineers (SWE) to encourage a diverse candidate pool.

Recruit necessary support intern staff (Project Mgmt, HR) to ensure efficient operations

Differentiate the MSI RP site through creativity and special events.

Create a “Team Motorola” mentality and model MSIs culture and values.

Build relationships with faculty across various scientific disciplines and encourage them to build research in areas important to MSIs future business.

Seek and facilitate interaction with start-up companies in the Incubator & Research Park to encourage entrepreneurial thinking among research innovators

Evaluate interns each semester utilizing MSI HR intern review process.

Build a talent pool for future employment at MSI.

Project Pipeline Coordinator

Work across MSI teams to collect intern project proposals, emphasizing projects that expose students to desired tech stacks at MSI and have a high interest potential for the students.

Identify student skill sets and specialized equipment/services associated with each project

Identify and train technology mentors and sponsors for each project

Organize, schedule and host end of project demonstrations

On-site technology mentor

Work with tech sponsors to gain detailed understanding of all research projects.

Give guidance to all project teams on objectives/ technical challenges associated with their projects.

Work daily with students to ensure technical issues are addressed and research hurdles are overcome.

Ensure students have understanding of technologies related to key MSI businesses (public safety, personal communications, etc.)

Mentor students on MSI software engineering best practices, tools and processes (e.g. scrum teams, sprints, JIRA, Confluence, etc.)

Arrange for regular touchpoints between students and technology sponsors.

Run patent scrubs on each project with technology sponsors and interns.

Measures of Success:
Conversion rate of Research Park senior year interns to full-time MSI employment (75%+)

Satisfaction of internal customers that sponsor projects (%, based on survey)

Collaboration measure (with other RP companies, startups, and university research)

Innovation measure (IPR, publications, internal innovation metric)

Desired Experience:
Experience leading teams and managing a budget

Familiarity with software engineering, product management, and user experience best practices and toolchains

Ability to motivate teams and create a forward-thinking and inclusive work environment.
Basic Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or Business discipline

10+ years of professional experiece
