Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to transport passengers operating CDL or non CDL-required buses to local and distant points following a specified time schedule, and assigned routes within the City of Sunny Isles Beach.

Position Scope:
This position is a key ambassador for the City of Sunny Isles Beach interfacing directly with the general public.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
  • Transports passengers over a specified route, according to the City published time schedule.
  • Assists in loading wheelchairs in required racks for passengers.
  • Maintains records and appropriate logs of passenger-related information, i.e. number of passengers served, accidents, injuries or isolated incidents.
  • Prepares standard reports on inspections, travel time, mileage, gas, pre-trip inspections and traffic accidents.
  • Routinely inspects vehicles according to Maintenance and Safety standards and procedures ensuring proper working condition.
  • Ensure vehicles is clean; regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
  • Professionally handle any disorderly conduct by passengers.
  • Maintains a punctual and regular attendance record.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other employees, and the public using principles of good customer service;
  • Identify and make recommendations on any cost control measures in the delivery of all services under his/her area of responsibility.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent driving record and ability to operate and detect improper mechanical systems on the assigned vehicles.
  • Knowledge of state and county traffic and motor vehicle regulations. Knowledge of public safety, and security operations, rules, regulations, precautions, prevention, and the protection of people, data, and property.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment when dealing with the general public and coworkers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports and forms. Good knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Exceptional customer service acumen and willingness to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
  • Ability to learn the operation, policy and procedures of the City and the assigned department or office.

Minimum Requirements

Required Education & Experience:

  • High school graduate or general education degree (GED) supplemented by two (2) years' experience operating large vehicles, i.e., bus, R.V., tractor trailers; or any acceptable related combination of training and experience. National Safety Council of Defense Driving Course Professional Truck Drivers preferred.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid Florida Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Transport Endorsement required. Successful drug-free, alcohol-free completion of a DOT/CDL Pre-employment Physical and background check as well as on-going participation in the City's random alcohol and drug testing program.

    On a continuous basis, sit at desk and/or stand for long periods of time. Frequently required to operate a motor vehicle. Frequently required to see, hear and talk with employees and the public. Frequently required to read and/or present documents, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means. Frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, taste, or smell. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment and field equipment and tools; on occasion lift or carry weight of up to 50 pounds. Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid weather conditions, mechanical moving parts, vibration, high places, fumes and/or airborne particles, chemicals, loud noise, and risk of electric shock. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • There is a one-year probationary period.
  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
