Senior Systems Engineer - Space Systems (Hybrid)

Collins Aerospace is one of the world's largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. The Intelligent Sensors & Space Systems business unit provides products and services to global government and commercial customers that enable mission success in the harshest environments of space, in the air, at sea, and on the ground. In Space Systems, we design and manufacture Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) and Active Thermal Control Systems (ATCS) on a number of space platforms including the International Space Station, the current U.S. space suit, unmanned satellites, manned space vehicles such as the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and the Orion (part of the Artemis mission to return humans to the moon), as well as future the of Space Suit Services for space station and lunar missions.

Job Summary:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join us as a Systems Engineer to support the design, development, verification & validation, and operational support of ECLSS and ATCS hardware for future space applications. Responsibilities may include: leading a systems engineering Scrum team as Product Owner and/or Scrum Master, system architecting & integration, system development trade studies and optimization, development of concepts of operations, managing & developing product requirements at the system/subsystem/component level for mechanical/electrical/software, thermal/fluid/chemical/electrical system modeling, steady state & transient performance analyses, as well as component sizing, verification planning & management of final system compliance through qualification/certification/acceptance verification. Skills in Jama, DOORS & DXL, Matlab/Simulink/Simscape, Excel & VBA, Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) / SysML / MagicDraw / Cameo Modeler, JIRA & Agile Methodologies are highly desirable.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required
  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder
  • Experience managing & developing requirements for space hardware
  • Ability to work well both independently and within an integrated product development (IPD) team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent writing & math skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership skills & experience leading teams
  • Experience with Agile & Waterfall methodologies
  • Exceptional organizational skills – ability to manage technical, cost & schedule tasks
  • Experience with NASA-based requirements
  • Experience performing system development/integration/architecting
  • Experience performing thermal/fluid/chemical/electrical systems analyses
  • Experience on hardware development program: proposal/development/manufacture/verification/operational support
  • Experience performing system development/integration/architecting
  • Relevant component hardware experience: heat exchangers, pumps/fans/separators/motors/motor controllers, chemical beds, sensors, valves, accumulators
  • Relevant system experience: thermal control systems, air revitalization systems (CO2/H2O/trace contaminant removal), pressure control systems, oxygen generation systems, potable water systems, fuel cell systems, human waste management systems or other equivalent systems
  • Broad technical engineering knowledge relevant to the design of space flight hardware – performance, mechanical, electrical, software, safety, materials & verification requirements
