Department Overview:
The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research
institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. We perform biomedical/occupational research and innovation for a healthy workforce, aimed at promoting health and reducing disease and disability among workers across the nation, particularly in Oregon.
Function/Duties of Position:
The Occupational Health Psychology Lab (Dr. Ryan Olson, PI) is seeking candidates for a full-time research-assistant position. Dr. Olson's research is focused on safety, health, and well-being interventions for isolated workers in dangerous or demanding occupations. Dr. Olson’s projects include research on injury prevention and health promotion programs with home-care workers and commercial drivers, as well as other working populations. The Occupational Health Psychology Lab is located within the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences at OHSU. This is a full-time, grant-funded position dedicated primarily to health and safety intervention research with home-care workers and new bus operators.

The initial term of employment will be 12 months, but with potential for renewal/extension at the end of the fiscal year. The individual who fills this position will contribute to the COMPASS for Navigating Pain study funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (through the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center), and to the SHIFT Onboard study funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The COMPASS-NP study (this project is in year 2 of a 5-year period) is a randomized controlled trial aiming to improve the health and safety of home-care workers experiencing chronic pain).

COMPASS-NP is being implemented with workers using a virtual group format, and workers are being recruited through organizational partners throughout the Pacific Northwest. The SHIFT Onboard study (this project is entering its final year) is a randomized controlled trial of an enhanced onboarding program for new bus operators to support their health and job success. Travel to SHIFT Onboard field sites (currently Portland, Salem, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Denver) to meet participants and collect data will be a duty for this position. Both projects involve working with software and technical research devices for intervention implementation, data collection, and processing. Logistical work preparing and transporting/shipping project materials is also involved with both projects. As a member of the Olson Lab, the research assistant may also contribute to other projects on a limited basis.

Responsibilities include:
  • Collecting survey, health, nutritional and actigraphy data from diverse research participants in the field and via electronic methods (sometimes involve travel). Collecting cardiometabolic data (e.g., body composition, metabolic rate, hemoglobin A1C, blood pressure).
  • Recruiting and obtaining consent from research participants in the home-care and
    transportation industries, including preparing recruitment materials and payment methods
  • Supporting intervention implementation, including preparing printed and electronic
    intervention materials and systems, monitoring participation in behavioral interventions, and providing technical support to research participants
  • Entering, managing, processing, and validating data in REDCap and Microsoft Excel.
  • Preparing for field work, making logistical arrangements, and managing equipment. Learning, troubleshooting, and problem-solving with research software.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field OR
  • Associates degree and 3 years of relevant experience OR
  • 4 years of relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, overnights, and weekends for in-laboratory work and field work.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, prioritize effectively, and achieve deadlines.
  • Ability to gather, compile, analyze, and maintain data in a range of formats and from a variety of sources, including research publications, web sources, and internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and organize information from research publications, web
    sources, and internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to conduct independent tasks and collaborative research with the team, with
    demonstrated experience in problem solving.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment when dealing with issues of a sensitive nature and to maintain research integrity.
Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:
  • Current driver’s license and ability to drive safely to some of our field-work sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biological or social science field
Experience:
  • Experience in research, especially related to human subjects, is highly desired.
  • Experience with or exposure to transportation and home-care industries.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Team, Smartsheet, Tableau, Adobe Articulate, Adobe InDesign, ActiLife, SurveyGizmo, and/or REDCap.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Spanish-speaking skills.
  • College-level coursework in statistics and/or research design.
  • Experience with actigraphy/activity meters.
