Senior Metallurgist

ROLE:

Responsible for the function and management of the metallurgical laboratory and its compliance to Waupaca Foundry, customer, national, and international standards. This is to assure all customer material requirements are met prior to shipment. The plant metallurgist serves as a technical resource for the foundry and with its customers. Additionally, this individual is responsible for understanding, controlling, and reducing assigned costs.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • SAFETY
    • Work with Health and Safety team to complete safety related activities on-time.
    • Promote a safe work environment and consider the implementation of safety suggestions.
  • ENVIRONMENT
    • Work with Environmental team and laboratory foreman to control minimize the laboratory s impact.
  • PEOPLE
    • Involved in the interview, selection, training and review of plant metallurgist(s) and the ongoing certification of metallurgical laboratory technicians.
    • Provide special metallurgy training for Melt, Molding, and Millroom / NDT, as required.
    • Manage and supervise the plant metallurgist(s) and/or metallurgical intern(s).
    • Promote the 6S standard in the metallurgical laboratory for a sustained clean, and organized work environment.
    • Working with the Training Coordinator, arrange for special training of the plant metallurgist(s) and/or laboratory technicians.
    • Typically, a 9-hour workday is expected. A longer workday may be required for special circumstances, as needed.
  • QUALITY
    • Ensure that all internal process and procedures are followed and documented by the plant metallurgist(s) and laboratory techs.
    • Assure that valid test results meet customer material requirements prior to shipment.
    • Assure compliance to written reaction plans and change management.
    • Evaluate and manage the launch of new work in the facility.
    • Technical customer service
      • Complete special customer requests for metallurgical testing, such as material evaluation for PPAP, new job launches, etc.
      • Produce metallurgical laboratory reports for the customer, as necessary.
      • Evaluate customer returns and provide professional reports on findings.
    • Continuous Improvement
      • Review and update, as needed, the forms, files or procedures in the Quality Management System pertaining to material quality and the metallurgical laboratory.
    • Arrange for metallurgical outsource processes to be completed, such as for specialty laboratory testing and / or heat treatment (both normal process and salvage).
  • RESPONSIVENESS
    • Investigate metallurgical laboratory, alloy system, and metallurgical non-utilization events.
    • Participate in daily scheduling meetings to optimize the daily work schedule.
    • Manage the preventative maintenance of the laboratory equipment to minimize disruption of testing (backup only).
    • Work with the plant metallurgist(s) to make sure necessary equipment supplies and consumables are on hand for use (backup only).
  • COST
    • Responsible for evaluating the usage of direct and indirect alloy.
    • nvestigate and implement efficiency improvement projects to reduce alloy usage.
    • Explore opportunities to reduce costs in different materials or different suppliers.
    • With the laboratory foreman, monitor the metallurgical lab s consumable costs.
    • Participate in an ongoing cost improvement project, as requested.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelors of Science or higher in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science.
  • Five or more years experience foundry industry or in related field.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • Possess and demonstrate the following:
    • Positive attitude
    • Respect and integrity
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to perform reporting and statistical reports in Microsoft Office.
  • Able to understand internal processes to lead continuous improvement teams.
  • Optical metallography, chemical testing, and mechanical testing are fundamental skills.
