The Opportunity

Our location in Abbott Park (Lake Bluff), IL currently has an opportunity for a Multi Craft Mechanic III in the Core Diagnostics division. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

What You’ll Work On

  • In this role, you will perform routine and complex repairs and maintenance on production equipment, including but not limited to work involving the execution of more than one of the typical maintenance trades: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, plastic/metal fabrication, equipment repair and installation of parts.

  • Initiate, facilitate and supervise the setup and improvement of business processes following project management and Lean principles. Drive the conversion of business processes/requirements into system processes and organize support on the systems used in the US & CALA Customer Service organization.

  • The above is accomplished through the BPI team and in close cooperation with peers and end-users located in Europe, APAC and the US/CALA.

  • Manage daily assigned routine preventative maintenance tasks on equipment/facilities, determine repairs needed or to prevent unsafe conditions or to comply with Company and/or Agency rules and regulations. (fillers/labelers, printers)

  • Respond to alarm or trouble calls as required and maintain a strong floor presence. Functions as a member of ADD/ATM Maintenance Team and assist as necessary to accomplish production goals and throughput initiatives.

  • Address production stop situations and troubleshoot causes of malfunction in equipment and participate in implementing corrective actions to prevent re-occurrence.

  • Maintain good knowledge of equipment in the production area (including setup and operation). Attend to applicable training needs to maintain consistent service to production equipment/areas of focus.

  • Escort and assist as necessary, outside repair persons in the performance of their duties in production areas.

  • Maintain appropriate records of work, keep inventory of spare parts and materials and provide Supervisor with needed information associated with parts or special materials needed to effectively perform repairs on all equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED and 2 (two) year Mechanical/Electrical technical degree or equivalent experience.

  • Hands-on electrical or mechanical skills. Experience Includes but not limited to troubleshooting electrical and/or mechanical filling, packaging equipment and utilities; making machine adjustments; timing mechanical systems for proper operation; electrical/mechanical skills with utility systems; machining or welding parts, experience with reading blueprints and schematics, experience with pumps, motors and drives; knowledge of the use of precision tools/instruments.

  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mechanical or Electrical degree (e.g. Associates or Bachelor's Degree).

  • Experience troubleshooting, fixing mechanical packaging equipment preferred.

  • Fluent in English, Spanish is a plus.

  • Knowledge of Maximo and SAP.

  • Be familiar with tools within the continuous improvement (eg 6 Sigma, Lean, Kaizen, etc.) and participate in problem resolution.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and know how to prioritize the workday.

  • ‘Out-of-the-box’ thinking and problem solving.
