Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in support of the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water, sewer, street, and storm drainage facilities and systems.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment and performs required labor for streets/drainage construction, repair, maintenance, and snow removal activities including installing and cleaning culverts, snowplowing and sanding, digging and backfilling graves, installing rock drop structures and rip rap channels, installing erosion control fabric, sweeping asphalt streets, fixing potholes and cracks in asphalt, installing major asphalt patches, ditching, and installing street signs. Must possess knowledge of M.U.T.C.D standards.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand.
  • Assists with repairs for water and sewer lines, including cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, tapping, cleaning and flushing of water mains, pipes, gates and fittings; repairing mains and service lines; installing service lines and fire hydrants; and shutting off broken sections of water mains.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans and checks tools and equipment after use.
  • Assists with special projects as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations as they arise within the City and on specific City projects.
  • Receives training on equipment operations and safety procedures. Assists in training lower level employees to increase their skills.
  • Assists in contacting residents and business owners where services will be discontinued and explains when services will be shut off and how soon it will be turned back on.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Must abide all safety regulations and the personal policy manual.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Removes dead animals.
  • Provides assistance to other departments as necessary to facilitate completion of a project.
  • Assists in providing required signage in coordination with the Police Department before and during special events.
  • Surveys and removes trees as needed.
  • Participates in various employee committees as needed or directed.
  • Attends workshops, seminars, and schools as applicable.
  • Mentor and train staff.
  • Paint striping.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Two years experience in road construction, drainage, water and sewer main installation, and inspection of associated systems.
  • Colorado Class B CDL Drivers License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire with good driving record.

  • Knowledge of road construction and maintenance, drainage systems, and water/wastewater mains.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally with the general public, developers, and City staff.
  • Writing skills to complete records relating to inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships, and good public relations skills.
  • Willingness and ability to train personnel to operate equipment safely and properly.
  • Ability to respond to call-outs within 45 minutes and 24-hour/day availability.
  • Ability to meet the Physical Demands and willingness to function in the work environment as listed.
  • Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Must be a Team Player.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stoop, bend, and walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; lift and/or move up to 75 lbs. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate construction/maintenance equipment and tools.


Work is performed mostly in outdoor environments where the employee could be exposed to wet, cold, snowy, and/or humid conditions, heat and/or sun, and/or airborne particles. Some work at construction sites and under emergency situations is required where the employee could be exposed to toxic or hazardous chemicals and/or fumes, high voltage electricity, moving mechanical parts, vibration, biological hazards, confined spaces, high and precarious places, and water/drowning hazards. Some indoor shop/office work is required to complete minor routine maintenance and cleaning. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the shop and field, and potentially high at construction sites and while operating certain equipment.


Telephone, mobile radio, common hand and power tools, chain saw, demo saw, and motorized vehicles and equipment including pickup truck, generator, loader, backhoe, sewer jet truck, grader, excavator, roller, street sweeper, dump truck, various equipment with snow plow attachments, compactors, crack sealant machine, sign post driver, jack hammer, compressor, gravel screener, and welder.
