The Senior Instructional Designer will be part of the School Health Institute for Educational and Leadership Development (SHIELD) Team which designs and delivers workforce training courses to school nurses and other health professionals. The Senior Instructional Designer will be responsible for the instructional design and production of interactive training courses, primarily in distance-based formats. This individual will work with team members and subject matter experts to design fully online trainings that meet both the needs of SHIELDs learners and fulfill SHIELDs scope of work as defined by its funder, the MA Department of Public Health School Health Unit. The Senior Instructional Designer will review course content, suggest training and design strategies, and ensure that developed course materials meet the SHIELDs quality standards. This individual will develop and adhere to project schedules and resolve technology issues. Collaboration and teamwork are key requirements of the position and contribute greatly to a highly refined finished product.


Essential Functions:

15%:

  • Work with SHIELD’s team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to:
    • Identify specific skills and knowledge learners will need to meet competencies;
    • Confirm whether the existing training materials meet those competencies and identify any content gaps with SMEs.
    • Create/obtain additional content or materials as needed
  • Design evaluation materials

15%:

  • Manage training production from assessment, instructional design to ‘go live’ stage
    • Collaborate with SHIELD’s Program Manager, Director and team members in project planning and delivery schedules.
    • Facilitate regular collaboration meetings/conference calls with relevant stakeholders throughout the process of developing trainings on any given topic. Stakeholders may include SHIELD/BU Staff, Subject Matter Experts, consultants, and/or partnering institutions.
    • Identify potential obstacles to the on-time delivery of highly refined finished training products.
    • Propose strategies that supervisors/training program leaders may institute to address these obstacles.
    • Document best practices for technical systems
  • Instruct non-technical staff on technical tools including LMS, authoring tools, video and Adobe Suite

30%:

  • Create storyboards for online, self-guided training modules
    • Revise or develop learning objectives to guide the module development and learners assessments
  • Structure content and activities for asynchronistic learning that is skills-based, hands-on and interactive.

35%:

  • Produce distance-based training modules
    • Convert storyboards into web-based format using software and applications such as Softchalk, Vyond, Rise, or Articulate Storyline. These storyboards maybe developed by this position, or by other stakeholders.
  • Create media to support learning as needed.

5%:

Assure 508 compliance and cultural appropriateness for all trainings.


Required Skills
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificate program in digital/online instructional design required.
  • Three to five years of experience required.
