The Infrastructure team plays a pivotal role in Engineering, providing hardware, services and solutions for teams to develop and test Carbon Black Products. We’re looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer who will deploy and maintain infrastructure and services for virtual, physical and public cloud Dev, Test, and Production environments. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and gain experience with cutting-edge tools and technologies.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Analyze, design, implement and support infrastructure used in development, test, and production:

  • In the first 30 days of employment you’ll get familiar with multiple technologies, solutions, services and tools. You’ll review and understand existing labs, network topologies, firewall policies, and more. You’ll work closely with various Engineering teams to support day to day operations.
  • Within 90 days of employment, you’ll identify improvements to existing infrastructure and deploy new solutions such as monitoring, alerting, systems, etc. You’ll identify solutions and infrastructure that could be moved to the Cloud. You’ll participate in on call rotation to support our various lab environments.
  • Within 180 days you’ll be designing best practices, standards, policies, and solutions to ensure robustness, uptime and efficiency with infrastructure and solutions used by the organization. You’ll automate repetitive tasks such as maintenance and security updates, deployment of systems, etc. You’ll ensure High Availability, Fault Tolerance, Backup, and Disaster Recovery is in place and functioning properly for all critical infrastructure. You’ll help move solutions and infrastructure from on prem environments to the cloud where applicable.
  • Within 360 days along with the above, you’ll be a subject matter expert and a self starter with our infrastructure, hardware and solutions. You’ll proactively identify and implement improvements, automation, monitoring, alerting, and more.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your regular activities may be modified to suit business requirements and your professional strengths, but you can expect a verity of the following assignments:

  • Deploy, support and maintain Dev/Test/Production infrastructure and services in virtual, physical and cloud environments
  • Support and maintain virtualized environments such as vSphere and Hyper-V
  • Reconfigure network switches, routers, firewalls and VPN as needed
  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues on Windows systems, Linux systems and Docker containers for services such as Jenkins, GitLab, Artifactory, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Citrix PVS, Horizon VDI, and more
  • Monitor the health and performance of all infrastructure and resolve issues using strong troubleshooting skills
  • Implement new monitoring and alerting
  • Use configuration management tools like Ansible and Puppet to maintain consistency across infrastructure services
  • Write Infrastructure as Code to deploy and configure infrastructure, services, and solutions
  • Implement automation with Python and PowerShell to improve agility and speed while eliminating manual and repetitive tasks, such as patching, deployments, configurations, etc.
  • Identify and migrate workloads to Containers, Kubernetes and the Cloud where applicable
  • Support the extended engineering team in troubleshooting test automation failures caused by infrastructure issues
  • Support a small Datacenter and a physical machine test lab by troubleshooting issues, deploying and configuring new hardware, servers, laptops and desktops (Windows, Linux and macOS)

Where is this role located?

This role is based out of VMware’s Burlington, Massachusetts office and is open to candidates in the surrounding area. Working remotely is fine but the candidate must be able to commute to our Massachusetts labs for hands on support as needed.
