Freese and Nichols, Inc. is currently seeking to add a senior environmental scientist to our team in North Carolina. The position will be located in any of our NC offices (Raleigh, Winston Salem or Charlotte) which is focused on providing A-E services to public and private sector clients including municipalities, state agencies, and federal agencies. This position will work with staff members from FNI’s other offices across the Southeast Division.

The successful candidate will be able to identify, pursue, win and manage environmental projects and help FNI build an environmental team in the Southeast to execute that work. Candidates should have established client relationships with local, state, and federal government agencies and other A-E firms. The candidate should have expertise gained from past projects in the Southeast or elsewhere that would prepare them for the following:
  • A record of delivering projects on schedule and budget
  • A track record of pursuing and winning environmental related professional service contracts.
  • Turn-key, design-build or CMAR contract vehicle and project management.
  • Stream and wetland mitigation
  • Specialized environmental construction practices
  • Section 404 Clean Water Act Permitting and supporting services, endangered and threatened species management, environmental impact assessment and preparation of documentation required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other ecological services in inland and coastal environments.
  • Riverine ecosystem restoration, coastal resilience, wetland ecology, water quality and quantity management, watershed science, and impacts of climate change on ecosystem health and infrastructure,
  • Geospatial data acquisition, analysis, and management.

Candidates should have a working knowledge and relationships with local and state regulatory agency staff operating in the Southeastern United States. This is a doer-seller role.

The candidate must have the ability to perform as a lead investigator and to lead multi-disciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, architects, and planners on environmental and water resource projects. This role requires:
  • Ability to design scientific studies.
  • Data analysis.
  • Preparation of scientific reports and other documents.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Well versed problem solver both in field and office settings.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with clients.
  • Ability to travel.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental-related field. Masters degree in related field preferred.
  • Completed Rosgen Level IV
  • 30+ years of experience.
  • Ability to utilize software including Microsoft Office products and ArcGIS.
  • Must have experience with technical and professional writing, preparation of statements of qualifications (SOQs) and fee proposals for professional services, and the ability to conduct presentations at public and client meetings.
