Job description

As a member of this team you would contribute to CDM Smith's success by;
  • Joining a great team as a Senior Designer working on various-sized transportation projects in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and other states.
  • Will work on various DOT infrastructure projects in collaboration with engineers and other designers.
  • Prepares detail and/or general arrangement drawings and sketches of unusual, complex, or original designs requiring the application of practical engineering/construction knowledge.
  • Performs basic calculations using accepted formulas and references per firm or client standards.
  • Prepares complete sets of construction drawings which will include multiple views, detail drawings, and assembly drawings indicating components of equipment, facilities, or systems where minimal information is provided by rough sketches and/or verbal outlines of requirements.
  • Assigns and reviews project-related tasks to junior-level personnel.
  • Provides senior technical guidance, direction, and overview.
  • Supports/leads field assignments as required.
  • Establishes design criteria for all phases of a project requiring the application of basic engineering principles, and a familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.
  • Supports establishing manpower requirements, man-hour estimates, and completion schedules, as required.
  • Participates in the development of project-specific design standards, with guidance and supervision, to ensure the quality of services provided to clients.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent with vocational technical training in basic CADD drafting technology and/or 3D drafting.
  • 12 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required.
  • The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 12+ years of design experience working on PennDOT projects.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience with OpenRoads Designer.
  • Advanced knowledge of OpenRoads Designer.

  • Good communication skills with strict attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a flexible team player and have the ability to adapt to changing requirements.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff.
  • Possesses strong software experience including the use of Microsoft Office for design-related tasks and discipline-specific design/analysis used in the CADD environment.
