We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


HJF is seeking a Senior Communications Strategy Consultant to develop a comprehensive framework/plan for this communications campaign. The ideal candidate has a background in academic health communications, with extensive knowledge of the operations of the Military Health System, Department of Defense, and the Federal government. The ideal candidate also has significant experience in creating strategies for organizations seeking to advance their position in the civilian and/or Federal sector. The senior communications strategy consultant will report to the Primary Government POC in the Office of the Vice President for External Affairs.


This position will be in support of the Vice President's Office of Research (VPR) at USUHS. This position is a temporary 6 month position.


Note: This site requires that the incumbent has lived in the US for three out of the past five years.
Responsibilities:
  • Meets with USU President to get a comprehensive understanding of their vision for a University communications campaign.
  • Reviews the USU Strategic Plan and USU Strategic Communications Plans to determine how the President’s communications campaign vision fits within the overarching USU strategies.
  • Meets with key USU leaders (VPs, Deans, Center directors, etc.) to assess the communications needs and desires, target audiences, and to identify current communications issues.
  • Meets with other personnel (student recruitment, DEI, Brigade, AFRRI, etc., student leadership, MHS communications, etc.) to assess communications issues and desires.
  • Assesses the existing VPE communications team and tools to determine if it is sufficiently staffed and equipped to carry out the communications campaign. Provides recommendations based on findings.
  • Identifies specific projects, stories and messages that are engaging, motivating and high quality, and which communicate impact and showcase the work and value of the University, its schools and centers.
  • Identifes specific opportunities for creating and delivering inspiring and attractive multimedia content about the work and value of the University, its schools and centers.
  • Identifies new and creative ways to specifically enhance the visibility and outreach of the work of the University, its schools and centers.
  • Identifies specific vehicles for delivery of communications activities and products such as written content, newsletters, case studies, including infographics and learning events, related to the work of the University, its schools and centers.
  • Makes specific recommendations to ensure that all communication materials synergize with and adhere to the University’s communications strategies and branding.
  • Identifies specific target audiences and key messages for the University, its schools and centers to ensure an enterprise-wide approach to communications.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have outstanding writing and oral communication skills.
  • Experience developing and managing overarching communications campaigns.
  • Experience developing and distributing cohesive, consistent messaging and positioning for all audiences.
  • Knowledge of the latest trends in communications, including digital and multimedia.
  • Experience in identifying and creating engaging content for a variety of platforms.
  • Exposure to a healthcare research environment, inclusive of research methodology and implementation.
  • Ability to analyze complex information quickly and simply for audiences.
Qualifications:
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or similar required. Master's degree preferred in Communications or Marketing.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years’ experience required with a proven professional record working in the field of academic healthcare communications.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in the Military Health System with extensive knowledge of the operations of the MHS, Department of Defense, and the Federal government.
Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
