SEASONAL STAGE MANAGER


The Seasonal Stage Manager is a temporary, part-time, member of TheatreSquared’s staff, and a vital member of the Stage Management and Production Team. They will act primarily as a key member of the stage management department, in addition to being a member of the production department. This position reports to the Production Stage Manager and Director of Production.


This staff member will help create a safe and supported environment for the creation of exceptional theatre, and to ensure a memorable arts experience for guest artists visiting TheatreSquared. In addition to an understanding of stage management, the ideal candidate will also bring an upbeat and outgoing attitude, while also displaying a strong sense of leadership, and a team player ethic. This key staff member will help the company to answer the question, “How can a theatre be an agent of social change and foster a community that is fundamentally inclusive and equitable?”


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AS A STAGE MANAGEMENT TEAM MEMBER

  • Under the supervision of the Production Stage Manager, work to support a clean, efficient and friendly environment geared towards the successful mounting of each T2 production.
  • Act as 1st or 2nd Assistant Stage Manager for productions as assigned
  • Help to provide a level-headed and calm demeanor in possible emergency situations when others may look to you as a source of comfort or clarity.
  • Communicate with PSM if a certain task has cause for concern. Be open to offering solutions and troubleshooting to offer a happy medium for the success of all parties.
  • Communicate with PSM, Director of Production, or HR in a timely manner if you witness behavior that may need to be addressed by a supervisor.
  • Responsible for returning the rehearsal room to a ‘neutral’ state at the end of each rehearsal day as needed. Also responsible for returning the rehearsal room to ‘zero’ in between rehearsal periods; this includes making sure chairs and tables are neatly stacked, tape is pulled, consumables are either thrown away or properly stored, and SM supplies are properly stored.
  • Being prepared to cover additional duties if another member of the SM team is unavailable.
  • Assist as needed in other capacities for special events, including Season Kickoff, Gala or other company events.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES

  • On occasion, seasonal stage managers may be asked to complete additional duties/assignments under the umbrella of stage management. Many of these duties/assignments would be negotiated under a separate contract. Such duties/assignments include, but are not limited to:
    • Arkansas New Play Festival Stage Manager (separate contract)
    • Backstage Crew Member (deck, board op, automation, wardrobe, etc)
    • Special project Stage Manager (eg: events, Gala, buy outs. Separate contract)
    • Youth Supervisor
  • As determined by Production Stage Manager or Director of Production, be available to assist in other departments including: paint, scenic, props, costumes, sound, lighting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to learn new skill sets.
  • Must exhibit capable verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines while managing self care techniques and communicating needs.
  • Must be able to work flexibly as a team member and present a positive attitude.
  • Ability to multi-task multiple projects, maintain organization, and be detail oriented.
  • Self-motivated, with a mature, positive, and enthusiastic attitude towards the goal of providing the highest quality work possible, in a mutually supportive environment.
  • This position occasionally moves backstage scenic items, which may be up to 25+ pounds.
  • This position requires non-traditional 9-5 hours. The hours are frequently long and irregular, including weekends and holidays.
  • This position occasionally requires extended hours in a stationary position, as well as extended hours traversing through areas of the building.
  • Capable understanding of the artistic process and excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomacy skills.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILL SETS

  • Training or exposure to theatrical intimacy policies and practices.
  • Training or exposure to digital theatrical practices.
  • Knowledge of SPT and LORT rulebooks.

THINGS TO NOTE

  • TheatreSquared operates under an SPT (Small Professional Theatre) contract. You do not need to be a member of AEA to accept AEA contracts. We are currently accepting non-AEA applicants. If you have a particular interest in joining Actors Equity Association, please note your interest, so we may take that into account.
  • TheatreSquared follows all state, local and federal guidelines regarding health and safety. When applicable, testing happens regularly for all staff and team members working on TheatreSquared productions at no cost to the individual.

HOURS

  • Hours vary greatly, depending on position, scale of show, and overall responsibilities. Nights, weekends, and some holidays are required for any show runs. Hours below are based on typical SM and ASM hours.
  • Expected hours during rehearsal: 40-45/week
  • Expected hours during tech: 50/week
  • Expected hours during show runs: 30-35/week
  • TheatreSquared does not utilize 10/12 tech schedules.
  • Whenever possible, TheatreSquared utilizes a 5 day work week (applicable during rehearsal weeks only). TheatreSquared’s standard performance schedule is Tuesday through Sunday.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Position is non-exempt and part-time with an hourly rate beginning at $16.50/hr. AEA contracts will begin at the SPT 8 minimum for the applicable role.
