Job description
Primary job responsibility is the general upkeep of Secrest Arboretum grounds and facilities to ensure a clean, attractive, accessible, and safe environment for all users.Typical work duties include: Establishment, care and removal of herbaceous and woody plant collections, including trees, shrubs, perennials, annual bedding displays, container plantings and greenhouse/nursery maintenance; Soil and potting media preparation, plant propagation, potting, planting, transplanting, pruning, mulching, weed control (manual and chemical), irrigation, plant removal, and treatment of pest and disease issues as required; installation and maintenance of garden features such as benches, statuary, display labels and signage, and other structures; Safe use and maintenance of hand tools such as bypass pruners, saws, shears, et al.; Safe operation of motorized vehicles including trucks, tractors, and other utility vehicles, specialized garden equipment (e.g. leaf blowers, tillers), and a variety of smaller power tools specific to horticultural maintenance; Assist the Curator with the accurate and timely documentation and labeling of existing plants or plants newly added to Secrest’s living collections; Assist Arboretum staff with training student workers and volunteers, special events set-up, and other duties as assigned; and Act as a cordial, helpful representative of Secrest Arboretum in all interactions with students, faculty, staff, volunteers, event attendees and the public. Mowing, turf care, and leaf removal are not required.
This will be an intermittent position that will be a total of 40 weeks/yr. Primarily during growing season, approximately Mid-March-Mid-November, weather dependent.
Required Job Experience: Previous professional experience in horticulture and/or landscaping.
