The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.

The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it's citizens.

Job Purpose

This position provides clerical support to the Visitor Services department. Specific job duties vary based on department needs and will include interacting with the public to respond to questions and requests for information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet and provide excellent customer service in all interactions with the public, staff and other clients.
  • Receive and direct or respond to all incoming communications, including: in person, telephone, email, on-line chat and fax.
  • Assist with high summer call volume.
  • Assist with filling summer Saturday hours.
  • Assist with covering vacations.
  • Process permit applications for all permitted facilities and activities including: off leash dog areas, model craft areas, watercraft areas.
  • Process reservations for visitor use of shelters, campground sites, recreation areas and other areas that may be reserved. Communicate with users to ensure they understand rules and regulations associated with such use.
  • Process payments in person and over the phone.
  • Provide reception and switchboard services for the District's headquarters facility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Starting Pay: $13.00-$15.00 an hour

Education and Experience Required

Additional Information: Must be 18 years of age or older by the first day of employment.

Hours: May - August, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm, occasional Saturdays, (hours may vary).

Preferred Experience: Good written and oral communication skills and well organized; Meet assigned deadlines with minimal supervision; Have a positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills.

Special training or other license, certification etc.: Must have a valid Driver's License.

Skills In: Dealing effectively with the public; expressing oneself clearly and concisely; working knowledge of Microsoft Office; time management; and keeping neat and accurate records.
