Job description

Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratory's overall research program.

· Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments

· Work with animal models e.g., zebrafish and mouse and/or tissue cultures e.g., cell lines and induced pluripotent stem cells, iPSC; use molecular biology and genetics techniques e.g., RT-PCR, in situ hybridization, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry, morpholino and CRISPR-Cas9-sgRNA gene knockdown

· Apply standard animal techniques such as genotyping and husbandry

· Manage colony of mice for genetics experiments, including setting up mating pairs, genotyping mice and harvesting tissue embryos

· Develop, design and recommend further experimental work and approaches to the research

· Perform forward and reverse genetic and pharmacological screenings

· Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles

Evaluates, analyzes and interprets research data, communicates results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts.

· Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts.

· Identify outcomes relevant to the research

· Acquire, organize, and analyze experimental data and perform statistical analysis

· Maintain a detailed and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments

Coordinates with junior staff to modify research protocols.

· Coordinate projects being developed in the laboratory, proposing research strategies and monitoring their progress.

· Meet regularly to train and oversee experiments of junior trainees (e.g., summer interns and IRTA students)

· Work with staff to confirm assay results and evaluate new techniques and instruments; search literature; propose, design and test alternative assays for difficult screening targets; confirm assay results; develop secondary assays

· Suggest alternative or complementary approaches to experiments

Presents research at national scientific meetings and symposia.

· Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals; prepare PowerPoint presentations as appropriate.

· Review, edit, and, as needed, write first drafts of papers, posters and manuscripts.

· Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups conferences

· Co-author manuscripts on research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals

Responsibilities:

  • Molecular biology, including molecular cloning, DNA/RNA purification, polymerase chain reaction (PCR, including qPCR, RT-PCR, RT-qPCR)
  • Animal handling, genotyping: Zebrafish

  • Gene expression analysis, including in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry, Western blotting
  • Data analysis, presentation
  • Tissue dissection and sectioning
  • Manuscript writing
  • CRISPR design/injection (zebrafish)
  • Microscopy (light/fluorescent)
  • Ordering supplies

Software

  • MS Office applications (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • Reference management software (e.g., Endnote)
  • Software for figure creation such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Acrobat

Requirements:

· MS degree in developmental biology, genetics or molecular biology is required; Ph.D. degree is desirable

· Prior experience animal models including zebrafish and mouse

Pay: $65,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
