St. George Community Consolidated School District No. 258 (a PreK - 8th grade public school district located in Bourbonnais, Illinois) is currently accepting applications for a SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICER to work Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM during the school year when students are in session (180 days from August - May).


Minimum Qualifications and Experience
:

  • Must be a current full-time sworn police officer or a “qualified retired law enforcement officer”, as defined by The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA). 18 U.S.C. §926C.
  • If actively employed as a current full-time sworn police officer, have a proven record of pistol proficiency, safety and training.
  • If retired, must have at least 10 years of service as a sworn law enforcement officer (with at least 5 years occurring within the last 10 years)
  • Must be a resident of Illinois.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid FOID card.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history records check in accordance with 105 ILCS 5/10-21.9 upon hire.
  • Successful completion of certified and nationally recognized training in rapid response/active shooter (Run/Hide/Fight, ALICE, diversity, etc.) as required.
  • Minimum of 48 hours of National Association of School Resource Officer (NASRO) training.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communications.
  • Computer skills as required for position.

Position Purpose:


Under the direct supervision of the District Administration the School Security Officer (SSO) will be responsible for providing safety and security services for the school campus and protecting the wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors. The SSO will perform routine patrols of school facilities and work closely with staff to ensure schools are secure both during the regular school day, and at events occurring outside normal school hours if required by administration. The SSO will have to demonstrate effective and proactive communication and exhibit the ability to develop positive and professional relationships with students and staff.

Rate of Pay: $25 per Hour

Benefits: 10 sick days; 2 personal days; $725 towards single health insurance; Board paid single dental coverage; $25,000 AD&D life insurance; IMRF Employer Only Contribution.

Essential Job Functions
:

  • Work a schedule that will include days that students are in attendance (i.e. approximately 180 days), during normal school hours, including student arrival and dismissal times. On occasion, the SSO may be required to work evenings, for school-related events or sporting events and the SSO’s schedule and work hours will be adjusted accordingly.
  • Help maintain a safe atmosphere that is conducive to learning. The SSO may initiate appropriate action to address matters that threaten the safety and security of the school or its occupants, and/or intervene with staff or students (with or without a referral from school staff) when necessary to ensure the immediate safety of persons in the school environment in light of an actual or imminent threat to health or safety. Any such intervention shall be reasonable in scope and duration in light of the nature of the circumstances presented and shall be reasonably calculated to protect the physical safety of members of the school community while minimizing, to the extent possible, any unintended negative effects on students.
  • Comply with and maintain a strong working knowledge of district/school policy and be able to apply that knowledge to effectively handle matters of concern or report them as appropriate.
  • Comply with and maintain a strong working knowledge of current processes and procedures pertinent to St. George CCSD No. 258 School Safety, Security, and Training Program through continued education, seminars, and training. Recommend updates and participate in District-wide training as appropriate or directed.
  • Interact with the students as a positive role model.
  • Serve as a direct liaison with the county sheriff and local police department.
  • Maintain communication with the county sheriff and local law enforcement for sharing information with patrol staff and detectives. The SSO shall request the assistance of law enforcement when necessary to protect the safety and security of the school community. When practical or as soon as possible thereafter, the SSO shall advise the District Superintendent or Building Principal before requesting law enforcement assistance on campus.
  • At the direction of the Superintendent or Building Principal, conduct investigations, searches and interviews of students or staff in accordance with District policy and applicable state and federal laws. Attend student or staff disciplinary hearings as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records or other confidential information about students or staff in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Promote a positive working relationship with teachers and staff.
  • Maintain a high level of visibility during school entrance and dismissal times as well as during passing periods.
  • Meet with building administrators to advise them of potentially violent situations and to plan for the safe resolution of those situations.
  • Assist with traffic control when necessary before and after school.
  • Check unauthorized persons in and around district premises.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Building Administration.
