Description of Job

ABOUT THE WORK UNIT
  • The mission of the Colorado School Safety Resource Center (CSSRC) is to assist educators, students, parents, emergency responders, and community organizations to create safe and positive school environments for all Colorado students in pre k-12 and higher education schools.
  • The Center assists schools in preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from all types of emergencies and crisis situations.
  • The Center provides resources, training, and technical assistance to foster safe, positive, and successful learning environments where early intervention occurs to prevent crisis situations. This includes, but is not limited to a resource website, providing regional conferences and training in school safety issues, and a newsletter
  • The Center works with an advisory board, including various representatives, such as the Department of Education, the Department of Public Health and Environment, the Department of Behavioral Health, and law enforcement agencies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Approximately 70% spent in the field, 30% spent in the office.
  • Travel may be required during work hours.
  • Occasional overnight travel 3-5 times a year throughout Colorado.
  • Required to operate CDPS vehicles.
DUTIES
  • Review, select and/or develop all materials for the CSSRC’s psychological safety resources
    Overall responsibility for the psychological safety planning resources of the School Safety Resource Center including program management, data collection and expertise in all federal and state laws regarding student safety and positive school climates.
  • Select and provide materials and training to personnel in school districts and charter schools, parents and students regarding all aspects of psychological safety and positive school climates in alignment with the Colorado Safe Schools Act (CRS 22-32-109.1) and other appropriate statutes and federal laws.
  • Research, select and when necessary, design instructional modules for professional development for school personnel that may include but need not be limited to:
  • Training in conducting school climate surveys
  • Resources for policies and procedures to address bullying and harassment prevention, suicide and threat assessment, primary and secondary trauma intervention, restorative practices, positive school discipline, interpersonal communications, adolescent development, basic mental health awareness for educators and parents, crisis response planning, substance abuse prevention and adult sexual misconduct among other school safety related topics.
  • In-person training for school personnel in all the topics listed above and others requested by the K-12 schools and institutions of higher education.
  • Provide consultation to schools on their psychological safety topics using best practice and current information from national sources of expertise including the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Department of Education, the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration and the Center for Disease Control.
  • Provide assessments of behavioral health programs in schools and resources available so that schools choose evidence-based and promising programs to most effectively achieve their goals.
  • Publicize to school district and public and nonpublic schools and institutions of higher education the availability of the training and resources for school personnel on psychological safety topics.
  • Make training and resources for school personnel available on the Center’s website.
  • Collaborate with national, state, local public and private entities.
    Position is responsible to not only provide services around psychological safety to schools but to coordinate and collaborate with all local, state and national entities providing similar services to the schools.
  • Grant Writing and Grant Management for the Emergency Response Program.
    Brief Duty Description: Position is responsible to pursue available funding and implement projects funded to address Colorado school needs around psychological safety of students. Solicit and accept on behalf of the Center gifts, grants and donations to implement the psychological safety efforts of the Center.
  • Support the overall work of the Center
    Support the overall school safety work of the Center by assisting with trainings, the website, the legislative report and other duties as assigned by the Director.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

Seven years of professional behavioral or mental health experience with youth/or youth in k-12 public or private schools will substitute for education requirement.

OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any field and three years of full time professional behavioral or mental health experience with youth/or youth in K-12 public or private schools.

OR

Advanced degree and two years of professional behavioral or mental health experience with youth/or youth in k-12 public or private schools will substitute for education requirement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (not required)
  • A masters degree;
  • Degree in mental health or social science;
  • Additional years of professional experience in schools;
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision;
  • Ability to build networks and partnerships;
  • Expertise in school emergency operations planning and management.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation, polygraph as a condition of hire.
  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively in-state.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license. This position may be required to operate a State vehicle.
  • Use of firearms is not required, however the position may be exposed to armed professionals with firearms visible. Member must be comfortable dealing with law enforcement professionals on a routine basis and be exposed to the equipment/tools associated with those professionals.
