A School-Age Childcare (SAC) counselor is responsible for engaging participants and leading activities. SAC participants are between the ages of 5 and 12. The SAC counselor is responsible for maintaining a safe, fun, inclusive environment welcoming to all. As an ARC employee, the SAC counselor takes pride in what they do for our neighborhoods and communities and are committed to staying true to ARCs mission, vision, and values.

PAY RATE: $21.00/hr; non-exempt, part-time position

SCHEDULE

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 2:00pm - 6:00pm and Wednesday from 1:00pm - 6:00pm up to 22 hrs/week
  • You have the option of working 2, 3, 4 or 5 days per week depending upon what works with your schedule
  • Schedule may change at the discretion of the supervisor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

LEADERSHIP

  • Active supervision of participants
  • Implementing activities as directed and following curriculum
  • Address behavior via positive reinforcement
  • Models appropriate behavior and provides opportunities for social and emotional growth
  • Collaborate with SAC team members to ensure the success of participants
  • Communicate with SAC team members, families, community center staff, and Seattle Public Schools (SPS) staff
  • Provide solution-based suggestions

SAFETY

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of designated program space(s)
  • Provide a safe environment by ensuring emergency preparedness is followed
  • Remove and avoid any potential hazards
  • Communicate hazards to immediate supervisor
  • Support regular safety drills
  • Report and document incidents/accidents to immediate supervisor

CARE & CUSTODY

  • Conduct regular head counts and roll calls
  • Maintain audio/visual supervision of participants at all times
  • Maintain required staff to participant ratios (no more than 1:15)
  • Ensure environments are well-maintained, developmentally appropriate and supports the needs of the program and its participants
  • Provide positive transitions that maintain ratios/head counts to minimize the risk of unwanted behaviors
  • Support other organization sites and programs as needed

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a part-time, Monday-Friday, with occasional weekends, position. The hours are between 1:00pm - 6:00pm during the school year. For break camps/summer day camp it varies Monday-Friday between 7:00am-6:00pm.

TRAVEL

Occasionally may need to work at another site as needed and directed by supervisor.

Qualifications

EDUCATION | EXPERIENCE

  • Must have High School Diploma, GED, college transcripts or other secondary education
  • At least one year of experience working with children between the ages of 5-12 years old in a recreation or childcare setting is highly preferred
  • One year experience supporting and following curriculum activities with a large group of children is highly preferred
  • Experience supervising and directing children through programming is highly preferred
  • Documentation of current First Aid/CPR certification, HIV/AIDS, blood-borne pathogens education and training, a valid Washington State Food Handlers permit, have cleared a TB test; MMR Vaccination record, 30 hours STARS training or documentation of exemption is highly preferred.
  • Successful completion of a WA State and Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF) Portable Background Check (PBC) certificate.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Washington State Drivers license or Washington State ID Required
