The Sailing Center Assistant Manager oversees the daily operations of the center in accordance with applicable policies, regulations, and guidelines, as well as assisting the Sailing Center Manager with long-term planning and development. The Assistant Manager ensures appropriate management of the Northwestern Sailing Center, focusing on safety and customer service while supporting current and long-range curriculum, and professional and community programs. The Assistant Manager will share responsibility with the Sailing Center Manager and allow a more efficient division of labor between the day-to-day operations, and long-term planning. Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.

Specific Responsibilities:

Administration

  • Assists with management of the daily operations of the waterfront, which includes, but is not limited to, NU Sport Club competitive sailing team, hosting collegiate and high school regattas, sailing and powerboat courses, clinics, summer camps, and recreational programs.
  • Supervise and enforce safety and operational policies for the waterfront.
  • Continually improve Northwestern Sailing Center (NUSC) standard operating procedures and administrative processes.
  • Comply with university financial policies and procedures.
  • Support temporary staff onboarding and development.

Community

  • Foster a welcoming environment and sense of community among sailing center members and customers.
  • Aid in converting class enrollment and one-time rentals into memberships.
  • Serve as a liaison between NUSC and other community partners, such as the City of Evanston, the USCG, and other on-the-water entities in the area.

Development

  • Use the resources of the sailing center to develop additional programs and sources of revenue.
  • Identify areas of potential growth within the NUSC.

Facilities/Equipment/Infrastructure

  • Schedule and supervise the use of waterfront facilities and equipment.
  • Ensure the waterfront facilities and equipment are properly maintained, and operated.
  • Develop technical infrastructure to aid in the tracking and management of sailing center equipment.
  • Assists the Sailing Center Manager with supervision of sailing center special events.

Other

  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws, and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
  • Additional recreation duties to be assigned during the off-season.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in program development, management, and evaluation.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certified (or willingness to obtain certifications within 60 days of employment).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage stressful situations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at once and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • US Sailing/US Powerboating Certified Safe Powerboat Handling and Safety Rescue Instructor (or willingness to obtain within the first year of employment).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience as a sailing instructor.
  • Competitive sailing experience.
  • US Sailing level 1, 2, or 3 sailing instructor/coach, certified instructor (or willingness to obtain Level 1 within the first year of employment).
  • Five years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role at a collegiate-level waterfront.
  • Strong background in fiberglass and rigging repair.
