Job Description

The Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech is searching for a full-time Safety Coordinator for a position in Blacksburg, VA.

The Safety Coordinator will provide consultative and technical support, training, and provision for regulatory compliance to the Department. The Safety Coordinator will provide industrial hygiene services to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control health-related issues including exposure assessments, ventilation and other engineering controls, personal protection, health and physical hazard of chemicals, laser use, non-ionizing radiation, etc.

The goal is the control or elimination of health and safety risks wherever they may exist within the Department through inspection, monitoring, training, testing, program development, and communication. The Safety Coordinator will attend appropriate University-level safety meetings and stay informed of changes in environmental health and safety regulations and communicate these to Department personnel. The Safety Coordinator will oversee laboratory cleanouts.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in physical science, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline and/or relevant experience
  • Experience working in Environmental Health and Safety roles
  • Experience with hazard review/assessment
  • Experience with hazardous chemical storage and disposal
  • Knowledge and understanding of biosafety and biosecurity principles, policies, and
Procedures
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards and the interpretations, technical principles,
practices, and procedures used to comply with OSHA regulations and industry standards
  • Proficient in preparing and maintaining accurate records and documentation; ability to read
and interpret governmental regulations; reliable; punctual; good organizational and
coordination skills; capable of following specific verbal and written instructions and adhere to
established deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • The ability to coordinate many different administrative tasks; determine the relative importance
of each, set deadlines, prioritize, and complete projects in a professional and timely manner

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Safety Professional Degree
  • Experience in an industrial chemistry setting
  • Experience working with undergraduate and graduate students
  • Experience performing safety audits and inspections in laboratory environments
  • Detail Oriented

Physical and Environmental Demands

Considerable walking, standing, bending and stooping

Ability to discern colors, contrast, depth (Vision)

Moderate to heavy lifting (25 pounds +)

Must wear uniform, safety/protective equipment

Environmental hazards included hazardous materials

Considered an emergency personnel position
