Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $3,775 - $3964 per month

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,775 - $6,960 per month

  • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Research Services Specialist provides assistance to and performs complex technical tasks for the Research Services department in the Library. The position assists with hiring, training, scheduling, mentoring, and evaluating student assistants who provide critical assistance at the Research Help desk. The position is responsible for directly overseeing daily operations of the Research Help desk. Participates in Research Services meetings and works collegially with faculty to coordinate unit projects (including outreach, engagement, communication, collections, assessment and accessibility). Works with librarian subject specialists to manage, inventory, and assess area collections.


Key Qualifications

  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
  • General knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures, including the ability to perform arithmetic operations to track and monitor vendor accounts and budgets.
  • Working knowledge of institutions and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Knowledge of computer office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, Google apps).
  • Ability to interpret library unit’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
  • Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.
  • Take initiative to develop projects, find resources and obtain information.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to conduct presentations and trainings.
  • Demonstrated competence in using Google Suite and other software applications to create, share, and access information.
  • Highly collaborative, including demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to serve as a resource to students, staff and the community in responding to inquiries and providing detailed information concerning campus news and events.
  • Ability to create and maintain program records and provide data for review in developing and implementing strategies and activities.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Two years of related library and/or administrative support experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Assessment, including outcome/objective writing and basic assessment methods (survey design, conducting focus groups, etc.).
    • Knowledge of key issues and trends in higher education, including student success initiatives.
    • Relevant experience in an academic library.
