Key Functions

1. Directed Laboratory Research (80%)

The person in this position plans and conducts laboratory research related to ongoing projects in the laboratory as prioritized by superiors. The research includes executing animal work studies, standard molecular biology techniques, modifying existing procedures, developing new laboratory methods, multi-tasking, interpreting, and analyzing data, as well as organizing and communicating the scientific findings to superiors at regular intervals.

2. Communication of Findings through Scientific Journals (15%)

The research scientist is expected to independently format data and write up findings in a manner suitable for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.

3. General Laboratory Duties (5 %)

The person will assist with the maintenance of various pieces of laboratory equipment and with general laboratory organization. In addition, the person will periodically assist with maintenance of cultured cell lines as needed.

4. Safety and Regulatory Compliance

a. Assists, and or writes and submits all hazardous and non-hazardous agents to the Institution

Biosafety Committee (IBC) in addition to all animal protocols to the Animal Care Committee

(IACUC) as requested by the Principal Investigator.

b. Supervises the handling of radioisotopes, chemically hazardous materials, and biohazardous

materials in procedures specified to meet MDACC safety guidelines.

c. Oversees maintenance of hazardous chemical inventory.

d. Manages lab MTA agreements for incoming, outgoing materials.

e. Ensures all personnel receive all institutionally mandated training and laboratory safety

training.

f. Responsible for shipping of biohazard and infectious material per MDACC regulations.

g. Ensures that laboratory is prepared for isotope inspections and safety accreditation.

h. Supervises the overall appearance, maintenance, and proper use of all laboratories and

equipment.

i. Performs quarterly lab "self" inspections.

5. Other duties as assigned.

Education Required: Master's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience Required: Four years of experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
