Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The Recreation and Community Services department is seeking a highly motivated, energetic individual to assist with the Drug Free Youth in Santa Clarita Valley (DFY in SCV) program. DFY in SCV is a voluntary drug prevention and education program held at the elementary, junior high, and high schools in the Santa Clarita Valley. The DFY in SCV program offers school curriculum support presentations, student-led club meetings, and monthly fun activities for students. Under the supervision of the Program Specialists, this position supports DFY in SCV program activities both on and off school campuses in the Santa Clarita Valley. This position will work varied shifts Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., varying 10 to 20 hours per week. It may include some weekend events between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The position will report to The Centre, 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita and will travel to various elementary, junior high, and high schools in Santa Clarita and Castaic.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Assists DFY in SCV Program Specialists in a variety of curriculum support presentations, elementary assemblies, club meetings and fun activities for the elementary, junior high, and high schools – exposure to school administrators and School Resource Sheriff’s Deputies
  • Assist with Summer Camp presentations at the Newhall and Canyon Country Community Center’s and Camp Clarita – exposure to the Community Centers and Camp Clarita
  • Prepares materials and activities for programs and events – use your creativity to develop fun activities
  • Assists with the execution of presentations, activities and events for large audiences of students – work on your public speaking
  • Assists with data entry, create documents on Canva, draft social media posts, set-up Zoom meetings, and reserve meeting rooms
  • Maintains a professional attitude and provide excellent customer service to participants at all times
  • Organize, prioritize, and follow-up on assignments – important skills that are valued by employers
  • Attend meetings and training sessions – Trainings session will look good on your resume
  • Follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and the safety of others – Safety first! Fun second!
  • Other duties as directed by Program Specialists and Supervisor – contributing to overall professional development
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • At least six months paid or volunteer experience working in an after-school, camp recreation, education, or other relatable setting
  • Knowledge in social media and trends
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license
  • Ability to drive a City van (7-passanger van), or SUV, or small truck with equipment – training will be provided
  • Knowledge of audio-visual equipment highly desirable – i.e. laptop, projector, PA system, etc.

  • Entry level knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canva

In compliance with the California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
