We are looking for enthusiastic, responsible, and motivated people to be mentors and role models this summer as part of the City of Napa Parks and Recreation Team! On a part-time or extra-help basis and under general supervision, performs work in support of Recreation Programs related to administration, adult sports, aquatics, camps, contract programs, preschool, special needs, youth sports, seniors, community events or special events permits.

Summer camp employees may be scheduled Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 5:30 pm from June 26 - August 11, 2023. Mandatory In-Service Training will take place Monday, June 19 - Friday, June 23, 2023 from 9am - 5pm. Additional online training may be assigned to be completed prior to the first day of work.

This part-time classification is at-will and not covered by the City's Civil Service System. No benefits are afforded, with the exception of participation in the mandatory temporary employee retirement plan and sick leave.

TYPICAL TASKS

Under direct supervision, the Recreation Associate acts as a leader and instructs others in recreational activities at parks and recreation centers and community sites. Recreation Associate is a part time seasonal class that provides guidance to recreation aides, volunteers, and participants in conducting recreation activities; and assists professional staff in planning, organizing and conducting recreation activities and events.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coach sport programs.
  • Lead games, free-play, and arts and crafts activities.
  • Arranges tables and chairs at various recreation facilities.
  • Operates standard office equipment.
  • Attends regular staff meetings and training conferences.
  • Admit patrons to recreation facilities, programs and events.
  • Schedule and coordinate leisure education programs and activities.
  • Coordinate special events, programs and field trips.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

No experience is required. Some related work experience is desirable such as working in recreation, sports, or a classroom environment; working with the public of all ages; or performing customer service, and record keeping duties; previous participation in group sports, volunteer activities or a general interest working with youth is desirable.


  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old at time of application and have the ability to obtain a work permit.
  • Current or ability to obtain CPR/ AED/ First Aid Certification
  • Ability to stand, walk, play for long periods of time
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for acceptable job performance
  • Ability to follow City regulations and guidelines for emergencies
  • Available to work weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, not required
KNOWLEDGE OF :

Fundamental rules, strategies, techniques, and skills of a variety of recreational activities such as athletics, physical fitness, games, arts, crafts, and music; oral and written communication skills; public contact skills; safe work practices.
