Job Duties

Are you seeking a position where you can truly make a difference in the community? Are you a Registered Nurse who enjoys working with expectant and new mothers? Are you familiar with the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program (MIECHV) wherein nursing staff collaborates with Federal, State and Community partners to improve health and develop outcomes for at-risk children? The Western Tidewater Health District is looking for a Public Health Nurse to join the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) Program team, which provides services to families in the City of Suffolk, City of Franklin, Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties. The ideal candidate will have the ability to adhere to nursing processes and the NFP model of home visitation and be able to carry a caseload of up to 25 clients. This Public Health Nurse will represent VDH by attending community partner meetings and at community outreach events and will also be responsible for shelter management in times of disaster.
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM and must be able to work a flexible schedule including some evenings.
Mileage reimbursement is available for any work related travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia. If a new graduate, must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the regulations governing the practice of nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • Current CPR certification
  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of public health and maternal/child health services, particularly in the community setting.
  • Requires adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations, driver safety policies, and all other state policies
  • Communicate verbally and in writing, analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
  • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
  • Excellent time management of day to day responsibilities
  • Basic computer skills as well ability to use current technology
  • Ability to complete duties under stress, deadlines and while attending to multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Valid drivers license and insured personal automobile
    Must be available and able to attend required training in Denver, CO.

May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years experience in maternal/child health, public health, home visiting or mental/behavioral nursing
  • Experience working with socially high risk populations in a home visiting setting
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Additional study in the area of health promotion/or public health is preferred
