The Boeing Defense Space & Security (BDS) organization has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Project Management Specialist to join our Experimental Systems Group (ESG) to support the development of new first-of-kind space vehicles and missions.

ESG supports a variety of government customers spanning technology domains and is an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment delivering new capabilities to customers rapidly and affordably. The ESG portfolio consists of a range of platforms and technologies including the X-37B, the world’s first fully autonomous reusable space plane, which recently landed from its sixth and most ambitious flight yet.

As a member of our Project Leadership team, you will join a diverse group of system and subsystem engineers. You will be expected to work in the area of project management coordinating across all internal and external stakeholders to drive your assigned programs’ development from early capabilities studies through demonstration.

An ideal candidate has a strong background in Earned Value Management Systems, demonstrated project management skills, aerospace industry experience, and knowledge of systems engineering trade studies. You will need to be able to dive into broad, minimally-defined design spaces, and help develop and organize a plan to effectively lead integrated efforts.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a core point of contact for customers and work directly with engineering subject matter experts across the business to quickly iterate and converge on achievable solutions that meet our customers’ needs.
  • Supports project management by providing coordinating the development of work statements, budgets, metrics, schedules, and other required inputs and conducting appropriate reviews.
  • Works with customers to develop and document project plans.
  • Analyzes and translates requirements into system architecture, hardware, software, and interface specifications.
  • Monitors supplier performance to ensure system integration and compliance with requirements.
  • Provides support to products throughout their lifecycle from manufacturing to customer use.
  • Supports systems/specialty engineers in defining requirements, developing trade studies, performing analyses, and controlling associated data and information.
  • Gathers, tracks, and analyzes reliability, maintainability, and health monitoring data.
  • Selects appropriate data to conduct failure analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Evaluates and recommend methods, processes, procedures, and tools for assessing the maintainability characteristics of the design.
  • Coordinates the development of certification and aviation regulatory proposals and plans and verifies compliance with requirements.
  • Develops and implement certification processes, tools, and procedures.
  • Works under minimal direction.


This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite in Seal Beach, California, El Segundo, California, or Cape Canaveral, Florida.


This position requires a current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) (U.S. Citizenship required) or requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.


Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of aerospace industry experience
  • 1+ years of project management experience

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Level 4: 3 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Level 5: 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 3 years of project management experience
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and external customers
  • Experience in spacecraft, launch vehicles, or highly autonomous unmanned systems
  • Experience in systems engineering to plan, design, develop, and verify complex lifecycle-balanced system solutions
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification

Typical Education/Experience:

Lead (Level 4):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 10 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Master+8 years' related work experience, 14 years' related work experience, etc.).

Senior (Level 5):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 15 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Master+13 years' related work experience, 19 years' related work experience, etc.).

This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. Note: Basic relocation will be offered for eligible internal candidates.

Summary pay range for Lead Level 4: $115,600 - $156,400

Summary pay range for Senior Level 5: $141,950 – $192,050
