Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated, compassionate, and culturally responsive individual to join our team and contribute to the dynamic work of building and serving our Pacific Islander and QTPI community in the Portland metro and surrounding areas. The Program Coordinator will oversee the newly established Pacific Islander Banyan Tree Project: Strategies for Social and Emotional Well Being.
They will lead the development and implementation of program activities that promote intergenerational cultural connections, healing, mental health and social wellbeing for Pacific Islanders with a special focus on priority groups from the LGBTQ community, elders, and young adults. They will also perform administrative, assessment, and capacity building duties tied to the project.

The successful candidate will contribute to the on-going work of systemic change by advocating for social justice, equity, and resources to address systemic neglect that has perpetuated social disparities across generations of Pacific Islanders in Oregon using a decolonized, equitable, and trauma informed lens. Interested applicants who have program management, assessment, and implementation experience and have worked with QTPI and other Pacific Islander communities are encouraged to apply.

Program Overview
The Banyan Tree Project seeks to improve the collective mental health of the Pacific Islander identified priority groups, by providing a safe, sacred space where community members can share meaningful experiences, feel accepted, and increase members’ sense of belonging, value, and respect.

The project fills several critical community health needs among the prioritized Pacific Islander groups:

1) social connection for the elderly; 2) safe and sacred spaces for QTPIs who may have experienced religious trauma that blocks their connection to the wider PI community; and 3) cultural belonging and identification for PI youth. By bringing together elders and youth of all genders and orientations to celebrate QTPIs, we hope to heal the deep trauma of the imposition of Western ideas of gender and sexuality the community has experienced in the diaspora.
