Job description

The production editor works to support BYU Online courses, Independent Study high school and university courses, and other Continuing Education products and program materials developed within the Division of Continuing Education. A major part of this role involves writing, editing, and final-editing materials written on a large variety of topics. The production editor also works with the Communications Manager Administrator to train and mentor a team of student editors, oversee processes and implementation, and maintain standards. The position requires professional editing and writing experience and the ability to constructively analyze and critique student editing and layout work. The production editor also collaborates with DCE clients to address concerns, solve problems, and ensure that they receive professional-quality results.

Essential Functions

  • Hire, train, and mentor student editorial assistants
    • Assist with hiring process.
    • Introduce new hires to task management software processes.
    • Train new hires in editing and layout processes, standards, and resources.
    • Review editing/layout work and give students constructive feedback and advice.
    • Participate in, contribute to, and lead weekly training meetings.
    • Manage editorial assistants’ task assignments, as needed.
  • Edit, write, and collaborate with clients and full-time colleagues
    • Perform final edits and any other edits as needed.
    • Consult with clients to develop and write content.
    • Work with other full-time staff to update processes as needed.
    • Ensure that copyright laws and accessibility standards are met.
    • Help update HTML and InDesign templates, as needed.
  • Manage special projects, as needed
    • Organize and manage special editorial, design, or other projects for a variety of clients and purposes.
    • Organize and/or edit business-related documents, as assigned.
    • Assist in updating and maintaining DCE editorial style guide, student training wiki, checklists, guides, etc.

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required:

  • Minimum education: bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or related field, and 3 years’ experience as an editor and writer.

Preferred:

  • Preferred education: master’s degree in English or communications, editing minor or equivalent and 5 or more years as an editor, 2 or more years as a supervising editor.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

  • Preferred: Formal training and experience as a supervising editor in a high-volume production environment
  • Required: Professional editing skills and up-to-date knowledge of editorial style guides (Chicago, APA, MLA)
  • Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Required: Working knowledge and understanding of HTML
  • Required: Ability to work with several stakeholders on several projects at once in a deadline-driven environment
  • Required: Ability to manage, delegate, and prioritize responsibilities
  • Required: Knowledge and experience with the Adobe Creative Suite—specifically InDesign

Approximate Starting Salary: $47,500 to $61,500 (DOQ)
