This leadership position is ideal for an entrepreneur with a technical degree and a financial mindset who desires complete ownership of a major product line in a global company that is the technical and market leader for products supporting mineral exploration, environmental services and construction industries.

You will lead and collaborate cross-functionally throughout Boart Longyear and with end customers throughout the world to develop solutions for customers to improve their safe, efficient and dependable operations. The Product Manager is responsible for all aspects of capital drilling equipment as well as aftermarket support, including spare parts and lifelong service support. Capital drilling equipment includes all drill rigs and support equipment, covering underground and surface exploration drills, sonic drills, and production drills.

Job responsibilities fall in general categories of Offering, Marketing and Sales Support (e.g., market demand, product & technology and lifecycle management, leading product development to deliver product line strategy and reduce time-to-market, and managing product lifecycles).

Although directly reporting to the Products division, close cooperation with Drilling Services (DS) is essential to balance internal customer (DS) and 3rd party customers to drive technology and digitalization initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10 years of relevant experience in mining, construction, civil engineering, or similar. In-depth design experience with heavy equipment or machinery a bonus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mining, or Industrial Engineering preferred.
  • Engineering, Project Management, or Product Management experience with industrial products, including working with product definitions, standard offering and options, product costing, and lifecycle management.
  • Proven ability to balance strategic developments with opportunistic needs. Demonstrated ability to align various demands and successfully manage projects.
  • Ability to learn from customer feedback, personal observation, warranty claims, etc., to drive incremental improvements in existing rigs.
  • Background in New Product Development and milestone processes. Demonstrated ability to align needs and wants across competing functions or interests.
  • Experience leading Product Development Process: business case preparation, engineering development process, product design, sourcing, prototyping, field testing, manufacturing, logistics, field service, product marketing, training, and feedback into continuous product engineering.
  • Experience in engineering processes, from conceptualization, design, sourcing, manufacturing, logistics to field testing and feedback. Curiosity and drive to understand technical functions and criteria.
  • Strong communication and writing skills. Proven ability to inform, train, and cooperate across functions and cultures and on multiple projects. Follows up and holds others to timelines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Available to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Build product road maps, aligning external customer and internal customer (DS) needs.
  • Own business case and project documents for New Product Development (NPD) and key Current Product Engineering (CPE) projects.
  • Drive improvements based on customer experience, feedback, and brand perceptions. Validate voice-of-customer through operational site visits. Identify unfulfilled needs.
  • Create and maintain price sheets for rigs and options. Implement a CPQ solution.
  • Strengthen the governance of the NPD milestone process into an auditable process. Ensure proposed solutions meet customer needs and meet business objectives.
  • Own monthly Product Design Review (PDR) meetings. Continuously align projects with functional owners in the milestone process. Drive faster time-to-market, performance criteria, target costing, design-to-value. Implement a similar process for CPE projects.
  • Plan and track alpha and beta testing to accelerate feedback. Participate in field testing.
  • Formalize a transparent process to prioritize engineering projects. Collaborate to proactively allocate resources for CPE, Products NPD, and DS projects. Track resource allocations to competing projects. Escalate risks and conflicts.
  • Drive and support new patents during the innovation and engineering processes. Identify transferable technologies from other industries.
  • Determine strategy for factory options and regional modifications through Technical Support Group (TSG) service locations.
  • Provide emergency support in technical drill rig issues, including urgent safety, breakdown, or performance issues.
  • Manage product life cycles, including specific model upgrades and phase-outs.
  • Primary owner of Operations section of new rig manuals, coordinating with Product Manager Capital Spares (Service section).
  • Provide applications and industry expertise to the marketing and sales efforts. Support tradeshows during setups and during exhibitions.
  • Articulate features, benefits, and value propositions. Build and provide value calculators. Develop product launch packages with Marketing and deliver training to regional sales teams and support customer meetings.
  • Conduct product & applications training for new and existing employees, including salesmen and engineers.
