Outokumpu Stainless Steel is looking for a “Process Engineer” to join our Operations team in Calvert, Alabama.


Purpose:
As a Process Engineer, you will be responsible for creating a sustainable operation through safety, quality, environmental, and productivity improvements. In this role, you will identify, propose, analyze, and design cost effective process procedures that drive growth, reduce costs, improve quality, and reduce process variance to streamline operations. The ideal candidate will maintain responsibility for supporting the relevance of the operation in the future through the industrialization of new products, materials, and processes to ensure our facility can meet the demands of the rapidly growing stainless market. Successful members of the team will be highly proactive and self- sufficient in pursuing improvement projects, be able to multitask and refocus efforts immediately to meet constantly shifting demands in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Improve current cost-efficient processes and methods that support the company’s goal of time critical and quality-focused stainless-steel production
  • Identify potential risks before they become a problem, focusing on root cause analysis and preventive action for equipment, process, and people
  • Develop solutions to production issues relating processes, and procedures to maximize efficiency and yields
  • Coach, mentor, and technically assist team members on best practices
  • Determine process requirements and prepare thorough and accurate process documentation, design and conduct trials to set process specifications.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot process problems as to make continuous and permanent improvements .
  • Perform machine capability evaluations, maintenance monitoring to maximize efficiency and yields .
  • Secures the resources needed for teams to excel, including researching, and proposing capital investments
  • Maintains equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed equipment, parts, and supplies
  • Troubleshoots, adjusts, and helps maintain machinery and mechanical equipment
  • Responsible for scheduling, planning and execution of short and long-term maintenance activities and securing cost and availability effective preventive maintenance
  • Lubrication systems, such as centralized oil and grease systems, lubrication practices
  • This position will maintain the mechanical responsibilities for the acid plant which includes acid farm, acid neutralization and acid regeneration plant

  • Supports management in optimizing quality, cost, availability, and performance of equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for safety/environmental issues and ongoing performance of processes .
  • Ensure in compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently in oral and written forms on development status, risks, and challenges to all stakeholders at any level within the organization.

Requirements:

  • B.S. or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Technology.
  • Or 3-5 years of hands-on experience working in a high-volume manufacturing or equivalent environment focused on mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Experience using AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Mechanical Engineering practices.
  • 1-2 years of experience handling acids.
  • 3-5 years of experience leading, solving or improving process change.
  • Experience with process simulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Strong math skills, ability to read blueprints.

  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with process simulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Critical and analytical thinking skills with the ability to communicate complex engineering techniques to non-technical team members
  • Knowledge of Predictive Maintenance techniques and analysis.
  • Demonstrates strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Moderately strong experience in project and program management methodologies, tools, and technologies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. utilizing proper lifting techniques
  • Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs and ramps).
  • Bend, twist, lift, stand, walk, reach, see, move, and hear as required by specific position.
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, including rain, extreme heat and cold and near moving parts. Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, vibrations, dust and asphalt.
  • Must be able to work in a high noise environment where the use of hearing protection is required
  • Ability to frequently use hand or fingers to handle or feel objects/materials.
  • Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to walk long distances and demonstrate good balance on uneven terrain or maneuvering obstacles.
  • Ability to safely operate powered industrial vehicles and equipment for tasks and diagnostic purposes, including overhead cranes.
  • Ability to safely use power and hand tools
