The Pratt & Whitney Compression Systems Engineering (CSE) Mechanical Design team is seeking highly motivated, experienced Principal Mechanical Engineers to join our team. We’re looking for people with an engineer’s curiosity, an explorer’s heart, and a perfectionist’s grit to help us build the future of aerospace. Experience in gas turbine engineering is preferred, but any experience with complex machinery and assemblies may be appropriate. If you have relevant mechanical design background and possess the skills and motivation to bring new ideas into practice, we would like to hear from you. Our engineers have design & integration responsibility for a vast and challenging array of parts including rotors, blades, cases, kinematic systems and stator vanes within the compression modules. The selected candidate will be required to take support roles in complex and high priority tasks, as well as directly support senior level engineers and program managers. This position requires proven technical capabilities, leadership skills, excellent communication skills, self- sufficiency, and willingness to work with and learn from team members.

The job entails creating new component designs and improving existing ones using a variety of tools including Teamcenter, NX Unigraphics and ANSYS with minimal oversight. The Designer will act as part of an Integrated Product team (IPT) and coordinate with supporting disciplines such as Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer & Secondary Flow, Structures, Engineering Dynamics & Loads, Manufacturing Sites and foreign partners. The engineer may also be asked to provide shop, vendor and test support as needed and will coordinate with drafting on blueprint creation using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals.
  • Application of mechanical engineering principals across a variety of rotating & static hardware as well as integration of detail components into functioning modules and systems with.
  • Resolution of mechanical engineering problems of difficult and complex scope, seeking a balanced system solution, ensuring engineering excellence.
  • Coordination of product definition data, design layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposals.
  • Design lead for investigation of engine field incidents leading to root cause and corrective action.
  • Develop serviceable limits for engine part wear.
  • Lead or support producibility improvement investigations at various vendors.
  • Perform engineering first piece reviews remotely and at vendor locations for new and cold start parts.
  • Assist in creation of safety risk analysis and develop risk mitigation plans.
  • Present and communicate results to customers and program management.
  • Analysis and disposition of quality non-conformances (QNs) for new parts, and supplier requests for information (SRI’s).

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Engineering Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 8+ years’ relevant experience OR
  • Advanced Degree with 5+ years relevant experience
  • Mechanical Design turbomachinery experience
  • US Person Status required due to government contracts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in jet engine design
  • Rotating hardware and airfoil experience
  • Proficiency in Teamcenter, Unigraphics, ANSYS, and classical methods of analysis
  • Proficiency with SAP a plus.
  • Understanding of hardware, blueprints, dimensions & tolerances, and manufacturing methods.
  • Active US government security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with fault tree investigation.
  • Familiarity with engineering standard work, Class I and II engineering change process desired.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a consistent record of collaboration, innovation, and initiative
  • Travel up to 10%
