PREVENTION / INTERVENTION ASSISTANT

HIGHLY QUALIFIED STATUS (HQ): Individual selected into this position must be Highly Qualified for this assignment. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements: Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or, obtained an associate's degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or, passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the site administrators, the Prevention/Intervention Assistant will implement a prevention-intervention model to support youth and families to promote academic success and increase graduation rates. The intervention model is a systems approach designed to help schools, parents, and youth identify the issues resulting in truancy and create solutions and support systems to change behavior. The Prevention/Intervention Assistant, Community Support Team and family will address the truant behavior in a way that is supportive, inclusive, and consistent. Responsible for implementing comprehensive student assistance programs in assigned schools that address problems associated with truancy and declining academic performance.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Function as a child advocate to promote acceptable school attendance for all students; assist school administration in establishing a Community Support Team; schedule on-going meetings to review caseload progress; consult with school personnel to encourage early identification of students with a pattern of irregular or poor attendance; serve as a mentor to one or more students throughout the school year; works with site administrators, families/guardians, teachers, truancy officers , and law enforcement officials on intervention processes to ensure student(s) success expectations; consult with District Unity Support Coordinator and appropriate referral youth services for students involved with those agencies and develop a process for re-entry to the district; conduct home visits with the Community Intervention Team to identify reasons for insufficient attendance and promote support systems to change behavior; collaborate with school administration and teachers to Identify students academically at risk and through the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process work together to provide additional instructional support; provide follow-up case management, on-going support, and feedback to schools and families; work with school counselors to develop youth prevention/empowerment clubs; participate in MTSS/Case Review meetings as needed; perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Required:

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience is desirable.

AND

  • Two (2) years of experience with students or parents in school, or community agencies.

Knowledge of: Basic parenting skills, student at-risk behavior, truancy, instructional practices including Nevada State Standards, District organizational structure and functioning, District and community resources as related to the position.

Preferred:

  • Education: Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, social work, human development and family studies, humanities, criminal justice or related field;
  • Experience: Two (2) years of successful experience working with at-risk students preferably in an educational setting. Experience in consulting with families and community agencies. Relevant experience in investigative work is helpful.

Knowledge of: Basic interviewing, counseling and casework principles and techniques; basic investigative techniques; report writing and record-keeping; laws, regulations and procedures affecting truancy issues; and community resources.

Skilled at: Communicating effectively with families, education personnel, various agencies and programs; recognizing and appreciating cultural differences, and maintaining respect for cultural different backgrounds; maintaining confidentiality of information; establishing positive relationships with at risk youth; motivating youth, preparing and giving accurate written and/or reports; maintaining constructive relationships with those contacted at work; Researching information and resources; analyzing problems and developing solutions; Maintaining and following up on case load progress.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a Nevada driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District.

This position is a 40 hour a week, 182 day position.

Eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses, and Credit Union benefits; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 20 to 24.75 hours per week received PERS retirement benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses and Credit Union benefits listed below; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive the benefits listed below, with the exception of Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the District.
Holiday: Eligible employees receive up to eleven (11) paid holidays each year. Vacation: Eligible employees receive up to twenty (20) days of paid vacation each year. Sick Leave: Eligible employees receive up to fifteen (15) days of paid sick leave each year. Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance: Eligible employees may select an insurance plan wherein WCSD contributes 100% of insurance premiums. Eligible employee paid dependent medical insurance is available for an employee's dependents. Insurance Premiums - Summer Months: WCSD contributes 100% of the district paid portion of eligible employee's insurance premiums for employees who are not scheduled to work in the summer. Life Insurance: The District contributes 100 % of employee's life insurance premiums. Salary Increases: In addition to any negotiated increases each year, eligible employees receive salary increases each July, for the first fifteen (15) years of employment. Longevity Bonuses: Eligible employees receive annual bonuses as follows: 12-14 years of employment, $700; 15-17 years of employment, $1,000; 18 + years of employment, $1,100. Credit Union: Outstanding benefits are available through the Credit Union.
No State Income Tax. No Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more. Retirement benefit offered is the State of Nevada retirement system, Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), which is one of the best in the country.

PERS ELIGIBLE POSITIONS:

Eligible Employees who select the employer paid salary schedule (Schedule A) will have Washoe County School District (WCSD) contribute 100% of the employee's retirement contributions. Eligible employees who select the employer-employee paid salary schedule (Schedule B) will have a portion of the legislatively designated amount paid by WCSD to PERS for retirement benefits and the employee, in turn, will pay the remaining portion of the legislatively designated amount of his/her salary to PERS. These options are introduced and explained in detail during the New Employee Orientation upon selection for employment.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
