Society Hill Synagogue Playschool is seeking a dynamic, warm, and experienced Assistant Teacher to join one of our classes for 2-3 year olds. The Assistant Teacher will work closely with a lead teacher in the class and fellow lead teachers and assistant teachers from other classes to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and to support the academic and social-emotional growth and development of all children in their care.

This position’s schedule averages 37 hours per week during the regular work week. The hourly pay is commensurate with experience, and the compensation package includes paid vacation, paid holidays, and paid sick leave. Society Hill Synagogue employees may opt to participate in a retirement plan.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensures and maintains a healthy, safe, clean, and developmentally appropriate environment for children.
• Models and supports consistent expectations for behavior and procedures for conflict resolution.
• Attends to children’s physical needs, including feeding, dressing, diapering/toileting, and health and wellness as needed.
• Contributes to weekly lesson plans that are developed by the lead teacher in order to nurture and stimulate all domains of children’s development.
• Uses creative approaches that engage children, appeal to multiple intelligences, and acknowledge individual learning differences.
• Communicates and collaborates regularly with parents, in person and using a variety of media.
• Participates in staff meetings and professional development opportunities offered by Playschool.

QUALIFICATIONS

• B.A. preferred (Associate's required), preferably in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education.
• A minimum of one year of teaching experience in a preschool or other work with children as young as 2 years old.
• A passion for early childhood education and commitment to progressive educational philosophy.
• A collaborative work style and strong communication skills.
• Familiarity with Jewish values, holidays, and customs is preferred but not required.

ABOUT SOCIETY HILL SYNAGOGUE PLAYSCHOOL

Society Hill Synagogue Playschool is a welcoming, inclusive school for children ages 18 months-5 years old that embraces diversity in religion, ethnicity, race, and family structure. We have six classes and currently serve approximately 65 students and their families.

Our philosophy is child-centered and play-based. We believe that children learn through play in a safe and nurturing environment. We respect children as individuals and respond to their needs with compassion and dedication. Through planning and observation, our teachers and environment provide stimulating experiences designed to enrich the whole child, including social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development.

SYNAGOGUE OPERATIONS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

In consultation with the synagogue’s COVID-19 Risk Mitigation and Safety Committee, composed of public health experts and medical professionals, we have implemented an updated, comprehensive health and safety policy and have invested significantly in air purification and ventilation systems, PPE, contactless hand sanitizer dispensers, and tents and other equipment for even more outdoor activities. Sanitization, always a high priority at the synagogue, has been adapted for COVID-19 prevention.

All Society Hill Synagogue employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
