Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow as part of the inaugural cohort of the University’s new Bridge to Faculty program. We invite applications from outstanding scholars whose work contributes to, advances, or expands the boundaries of epidemiology and biostatistics and will have completed a PhD in epidemiology or biostatistics or related disciplines between July 1, 2019 and August 15, 2023. The Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) is committed to building and supporting a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community of scholars and students and shares the University’s goals regarding inclusive excellence.

The Bridge to Faculty Scholar is expected to: 1) establish a robust program of research, 2) participate in the intellectual life of the department, 2) meet regularly with faculty mentors; 3) participate in professional development opportunities and 4) collaborate cross the college and institution when deemed appropriate. The scholar will have access to institutional and departmental resources specifically designed to support their readiness for a tenure-track position.
During the postdoctoral fellowship phase of the Bridge to Faculty Scholar Program the primary purpose is to progress toward an independent research career in a mentored environment by strengthening expertise in a defined area of research with a focus on publishing research papers, presenting at research conferences, and increasing proficiency in grant writing. Teaching opportunities will be considered on a selected basis if they will benefit the scholar’s readiness for the transition to a tenure-track faculty position.

Minimum Qualifications
Terminal degree in preferred or related field prior to start.

Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related field from an accredited institution.

Must demonstrate the potential to successfully transition into a tenure-track faculty position after the postdoctoral phase by demonstrated evidence of potential for high-quality scholarly research and the potential for excellence in teaching and competing for external research funding. It is preferable if the candidate’s expertise aligns with the expertise of the department’s current faculty. Examples of existing epidemiology faculty expertise are infectious and parasitic disease epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, epidemiology of aging, perinatal epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, social epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, and epidemiology of cardiometabolic outcomes including diabetes disparities. Examples of existing biostatistics faculty expertise are multivariate analysis, high-dimensional data analysis, multilevel modeling, network analysis, Bayesian modeling and survival analysis with applications to public health, genetics, brain imaging, functional data analysis, longitudinal data analysis and precision medicine.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
For both epidemiology and biostatistics skills are needed in data management, data analysis, data interpretation and inference, the ability to effectively present information, conduct literature reviews, and write and publish high-quality manuscripts for publication. For epidemiology, foundational knowledge in a specific epidemiology research domain is needed. For biostatistics, foundational knowledge in a specific biostatistics research domain is needed.
