The Denver City Attorney’s Office is one of the largest law firms in Colorado, with over 240 attorneys and staff members comprised of paralegals, victim advocates, and other support and supervisory staff members. The City Attorney’s Office Prosecution and Code Enforcement Section is seeking qualified candidates for a new part-time Post-Adjudication Victim Advocate to work with victims of municipal crimes whose cases have been sentenced or dismissed in court to help them achieve greater stability. Successful candidates will have experience working with crime victims; experience working with the criminal justice system is a plus but not mandatory. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to develop rapport with victims/clients, show empathy, create service plans, work with community-based service providers, and feel comfortable meeting victims/clients out in the community when deemed safe. The position requires the abilities to multi-task, communicate well, and offer trauma-informed support to individuals of all ages, races, income levels, and identities.
Job Duties Include:
  • Performs outreach to build relationships with victims/clients using a trauma-informed model. Offers emotional support and crisis support with validation, connection and empowerment
  • Assesses victim/client needs, makes referrals and collaborates with community service organizations
  • Contacts crime victims/clients by phone or mail to explain victim rights, provide information and answer questions about the criminal process and provide ongoing safety planning
  • Maintains contact with victims/clients and assists them with such things as therapy referrals, protective orders, emergency funds, transportation needs, food stability, and temporary housing/shelter programs
  • Works with victims/clients to develop an individual service plan, including formulating goals with associated timelines and identifying community agencies and resources available, service providers and other pertinent resources
  • Engages in on-going coaching, problem-solving and facilitation with victims/clients to resolve immediate or recurring problems and barriers to receiving and/or participating in services or programs, and monitors eligibility for services
  • Performs crisis intervention as needed for victims/clients who have an immediate need for services due to unforeseen circumstances where their safety is in question
  • Provides coordination of services across systems
  • Builds professional relationships and networks with community resources and service providers across systems for the populations served
  • Facilitates access to services with knowledge of eligibility and program requirements to ensure expedited and continued services and resources for victim/client to succeed
  • Complies with the Colorado Victims Rights Act
  • Explains victim compensation funds and restitution options available to victims
  • Maintains and updates files by recording client contacts to ensure that federal, state and local requirements are met
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested
The successful candidate should possess the following capabilities:
  • Knowledge of community resources sufficient to be able to provide efficient and effective linkage to them
  • Excellent communication skills including knowledge of active listening, feedback, empathy and validation. Skill in interviewing techniques sufficient to be able to interview clients to obtain and verify information
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and victim-centered advocacy
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to bridge information and communication gaps between clients and service providers
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and its procedures sufficient to be able to assist and guide victims through the investigation and judicial process is a plus, but not required
About You
We are looking for a team player who is detail-oriented and wants to be a part of a team of professionals whose primary focus is support for victims whose cases have been adjudicated. You must be self-motivated, very dependable and be able to build rapport with older adults. The candidate should thrive in a fast-paced environment that is constantly changing as crises and cases evolve; be able to effectively communicate with victims, advocates, attorneys, and other staff members; and possess the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work effectively from both home and office settings.

  • Education Requirement: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice or a related field
  • Experience Requirement: Have two (2) years of paid or volunteer human services experience providing casework, case management or trauma services to the victims of violent or non-violent crimes
  • Education and Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
