SUMMARY

The Plant Manager is the site leader for TB Wood’s who provides hands-on leadership and drives results for the TB Wood’s business while also directing the day-to-day manufacturing of quality products that are delivered on-time to customer request dates and within budget in a safe working environment. In addition, this position is accountable for achieving or exceeding product cost targets (KPI’s) and maintaining proper inventory levels within their budgeted overhead structure. The incumbent will also be a champion for and leader of continuous improvements within the factory.

Directly reporting to this position are management and professionals in production operations, manufacturing and design engineering, quality, procurement and supply chain, scheduling and planning, safety, warehousing, human resources, and casting sales.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct and coordinate the execution of operating strategies and production plans based on company objectives (forecast and budget) to improve productivity and sustain 95% on time delivery to customer demand.
  • Maintain a safe work environment that is compliant with all OSHA and EPA regulations and guidelines Drive focus on leading environmental health and safety (EHS) metrics and continuous improvement initiatives that promote safety.
  • Support Altra’s efforts to drive a culture of continuous improvement. Actively manage and lead kaizen events and other improvement activities as dictated by Policy Deployment, Model Value Stream, and Daily Management. Assume a leading role in developing TBW’s breadth and depth in ABS tools with a focus on building problem-solving capability. Manage key projects involving cross-functional teams to support strategic initiatives and key development programs.
  • Lead commercial strategy development and deployment, including market segmentation, targeting and go to market strategy (including channel strategy) for the commercial representatives. Responsible for margin expansion for all new business.
  • Develop deep, collaborative relationships with key clients and channel partners such as commercial representatives. Determine sales targets for the various customers, markets and channels and for each market segment.
  • Ensure organizational sustainability by hiring, managing, developing, and building bench strength to prepare for growth. Actively participate in the organizational talent process and execute actions thereof.


  • Drive employee engagement actions and nourish a culture of trust and compliance that will always maintain confidence of employees, shareholders, customers, and society at large.
  • Maintain all quality requirements associated with multiple product lines within a high mix, low volume environment. Ensure production conditions satisfy quality specifications by leading with a “zero defect” mentality (i.e. achieve aggressive reduction targets in customer defects, scrap, and internal quality). Ensure the execution of quality containments, and the implementation and sustainment of countermeasures.
  • Operate within all budgets, including achieving product cost/margin forecasts. Maintain minimal inventory levels to meet the dynamic needs of the business using both material requirements planning (MRP) inventory and Kanban inventory management system.
  • Accountable for performance of the supply chain team including quality, production, planning, and sourcing. Drive improvement in a cost-effective supply chain through structured planning, clear communications, year-over-year cost reductions and process improvements both internally and at supplier locations.
  • Work closely with Design Engineering leadership to develop and execute new product development. Responsible for driving lower product costs through process improvements that include setup time, cycle time, and lead time reduction.
  • Work with the commercial teams and customer support to verify business forecasts related to labor and machine capacity. Regularly communicate with the Finance team to maximize operational efficiencies and profit.
  • Directly lead daily management meetings, including review of basic metrics and root cause countermeasure approach to insure adherence to business unit objectives.
  • Lead and participate in cross functional cost reduction efforts on direct labor, variable costs, and alternative production process solutions. Support material cost reductions with supply chain and engineering.
  • Support a Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) culture with focus on supporting the Preventative Maintenance (PM) program and work with maintenance team on improving equipment uptime.
  • Establish and lead communication meetings with direct reports.
  • Actively develop and motivate team members through aspects of talent management. This includes engagement with the annual performance and development processes, talent assessments, and other similar initiatives.
  • Ensure organizational legal and regulatory compliance.

  • High level of technical aptitude, including a strong knowledge and expertise related to foundry and machining operations.

  • In-depth understanding of financial concepts including P&L management, budgeting, financial forecasting, variable overheads (scrap, MRO, freight), manpower planning, and overall budget monitoring and control. Capable of developing commercial growth and go to market strategies.
  • Ability to cascade policy deployment and create strong processes for monitoring and control as well as pull the right levers to achieve CVD targets.
  • Strategically focused and capable of creating and achieving a desired future state (vision) that includes the ability to identify and drive opportunities to grow the foundry business. Leadership or involvement with a formal strategic planning process is desired.
  • Capable of leading change through a sense of urgency, pride, and respect for people in all aspects of the business. Anticipates and manages dynamic situations, understands impact, and ensures alignment of resources and costs.
  • Sound judgment and decision making through rational, thoughtful, and data-enabled reasoning to high pressure/high stakes situations. Ability to read and influence shop floor behaviors and make tough decisions when necessary to drive a culture of operational excellence from top to bottom.

  • Willing and able to travel to other Altra sites, as well as attendance at off-site meetings/events and professional development conferences or seminars.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in an Engineering discipline or Operations Management.
  • At least 10 years of experience managing teams, including cross-functional leadership in a foundry operations environment is required. Prior experience with gray iron/ductile iron, green sand, core making and no bake environment(s) is strongly preferred, as well as machining and purchasing.
  • Functional experience or leadership in three functions is desired: operations, supply chain, finance, engineering, sales, marketing/product management.
  • Prior experience with utilizing lean methodology and tools to improve operations is strongly preferred.

Physical Demand and Work Environment:

Majority of time is spent in a manufacturing production environment with some (but not all) climate-controlled areas. Personal protective safety equipment must be worn, and proper safety precautions must be observed. Potential exposure may include, but is not limited to: solvents, dusts, lead, fiberglass, noise, heat, cold.

Potential physical demands include, but are not limited to: frequent walking and standing, occasional twisting, stooping, carrying, handling, pushing, and pulling; climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Potential sensory demands include but are not limited to: hearing and seeing.
