Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a part time PRN On Duty Physician's Assistant. This position is responsible for performing the required admission assessment of patients brought to the hospital and responding to acute medical/psychiatric needs of all inpatients for the duration of the on-call period.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of approved physician's assistant training; Virginia Physician Assistant license; current certification; active DEA; current BLS certification; relevant extensive experience in the performance of histories and physical examinations and the diagnosis and treatment of acute medical and psychiatric disorders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual a plus. Veteran's preference.

Western State Hospital is currently seeking applicants a PRN on-duty Physician Assistant.

We are a 246 bed, State-of-the-art psychiatric hospital that is
Joint Commission and CMS accredited. Located in Staunton, Virginia in the midst of the Shenandoah Valley at the crossroads of Interstate 81 and 64, we are easily accessible to Virginia localities. The hospital is well regarded locally and across the state, has provided consultation to other hospitals regarding our Psychosocial Rehab “Mall” programs, effectively recruits and retains professional staff, and works actively within the hospital and with our community partners to produce good clinical and quality of life outcomes for individuals with severe mental illness. You would be joining a medical staff that is dedicated, talented and highly collaborative and supportive and includes over 10 Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants.

The hospital includes Admission and Extended Care units, and a Med/Psych unit. The hospital is an active training site for many programs (University of Virginia training residents/medical students and recruiting psychiatrists into public sector; JMU for nursing and Physician Assistants, UVA and others for training Nurse Practitioners) All physicians are board certified and most have faculty appointment at University of Virginia (UVA) Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences.

On-Duty PRN Physicians Assistant (nights, weekends, holidays) Responsibilities Include collaborating with on-call admission coordinator regarding any afterhours referrals to determine appropriateness of admission and medical clearance. Admission assessment, including: history, physical exam, mental status, suicide/risk assessment, risk factors for seclusion and restraint, initial laboratory studies, AIMS screening, Alcohol/Detox Assessment, Tobacco Screening, VTE screening, admitting orders, preliminary treatment and management of medical and psychiatric problems. Assessment and management of acute psychiatric and medical issues which occur during the on-call shift on all patients in the hospital. Consultation and 24 hour back-up with primary care and psychiatric physician fully available. Arranging for transfer of patients requiring higher level of services or care to the University of Virginia or Augusta Medical Center. Assess all patient’s upon return from outside emergency room evaluation or from special hospitalization and write any orders as indicated. Consultation with back-up primary care of psychiatric physician. Electronic Medical Record – Cerner Millenium. Completion of required documentation in performing above duties.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants are required to have a Virginia medical license, Current BLS certification. Completion of approved educational program for Physician Assistant. Completion of application to and approval by NCCPA. At least 5 years of PA experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of laboratory evaluations and monitoring of psychopharmacologic agents is preferred. Bi-lingual in Spanish and English is a plus.
Special Requirements
The successful applicant must pass a criminal background investigation, drug screening test and employment reference check. The applicant must have the ability to perform at the level of physical demands noted on the Employee Work Profile and the verified ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
