Job Summary

The Gift Planning Officer works under general supervision with the Director of Philanthropy, the Major Gifts Team, the Annual Giving Manager, the Director of Marketing and Communications, and the Executive Director to develop, launch and implement strategies for the gift planning program. The primary objective of this role is to invest prospective donors in the vision of Denver Health and to develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donor's interests, passions and values and to secure financial investments (current and deferred) as a result of these relationships. The Gift Planning Officer will be responsible for a portfolio of approximately 50-70 major gift donors and gift planning prospects.

Essential Functions:
  • Portfolio and Moves Management
    • Create, integrate and implement short-, intermediate- and long-term strategies for individual major gifts
    • Develop strategic funding requests based on the foundation’s short-, intermediate- and long-term funding goals for high-net worth individuals
    • Act as primary relationship manager for individual prospects of $25,000 or more per year to reach or exceed ambitious annual funding goals
    • Play a lead role in planning for, asking for, and closing major and deferred gifts
    • Manage and track relationship processes for individual major gift donors and prospects using Moves Management
    • Leverage funding campaigns, events and activities (volunteer experiences, tours, receptions, etc.) for major gift donors and prospects
    • Develop major gift materials, including briefing memos, proposals and stewardship materials
    • Assist with review and verification of major gift donor recognition lists
    • Track and report relationship management activity using the Foundation’s constituent relationship management system including identification, cultivation, briefing, solicitation and stewardship of prospective and current individual major donors

  • Program Development and Management
    • Build the gift planning program, including the launch of a legacy society, that attracts participation and expands our donor base
    • Promote the gift planning program to internal and external audiences, promoting bequests and other estate planning instruments
    • Work collaboratively with gift officers to educate and assist the team through all stages of deferred gift proposal development, solicitation and progress
    • Use data and industry trends to inform the deferred giving program and portfolio assignments
    • Develop creative and innovative gift planning collateral materials, print and digital, in collaboration with marketing and communications.
    • Create program infrastructure and document protocols for receiving, tracking, acknowledging deferred intentions as well as realized gifts in partnership with the operations team
    • Serve as information resource for the philanthropy team on gift planning vehicles, relevant tax law changes and effective gift planning fundraising
    • Collaborate with the annual giving manager on integrating gift planning solicitations, where appropriate, in the annual giving and employee giving campaigns
    • Engage with professional advisors (lawyers, financial planners, tax accountants, etc.) to advance gift discussions or accept realized estate intentions

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree required

Work Experience:
  • 4-6 years Nonprofit Major Gift Fundraising required and,
  • 1-3 years Gift Planning Experience required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Solid understanding of gift planning vehicles as well as nonprofit fundraising principles and methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to meet financial goals for major gift fundraising
  • Demonstrated ability to persuade others
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision
  • Strong written, oral and presentation communication skills
  • Experience with constituent relationship management system
  • Attention to detail and strong project management skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
