GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The pharmacy technician is responsible for assisting licensed pharmacists with the duties associated with managing a pharmacy. They work under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Job duties include: setting up and maintaining patient records; preparation and assembly of medication for pharmacist approval; dispensing prescription drugs and other medical devices to patients and instructing on their use; handling insurance claims; and managing drug inventory and supplies. Pharmacy technicians must be meticulous to avoid possible dangers and ensure safety. They must also be able to communicate accurately with third-parties while handling insurance matters. Pharmacy technicians also handle inventory to ensure that the pharmacy is stocked with the appropriate amount of medication. They may also perform administrative duties in pharmaceutical practice, such as reviewing prescription requests with providers/clinic staff and insurance companies to ensure correct medications are provided and payment is received. The pharmacy technician is required to work with patients and staff to ensure access to the required pharmaceutical therapies.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge to process prescriptions: obtains all necessary demographic information – patient profile, verifies patients income in EHS and applies appropriate price plan, scans drug and verifies all required information, assembles product for dispensing and files prescription records.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of drugs including but may not be limited to, drug names (brand and generic), pronunciation of drugs, drug indications and dosage forms available – including proficiency in identifying drug duplications and potential allergies.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of pharmacy billing functions: POS (Point of Sale computer system), third party processes, 340B pricing, end of day closeout, etc.
  • The technician may act as cashier or clerk who manages money, answers the telephone, supply and stock shelves and performs other administrative duties.
  • Demonstrates the ability to conduct all pharmacy inventory processes: Proper storage and handling of inventory 340B, CMAP and PAP drug distribution, Rotating inventory, pulling expired drugs, returning expired drugs, returning medication to stock and ordering inventory.
  • Demonstrates the ability to process patient assistance program applications (i.e. CMAP, Sanofi).
  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of pharmacy formulary and appropriate drug knowledge.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with patients, staff and outside vendors (i.e. insurance companies, drug company PAP representatives, etc.).
  • Demonstrates excellent computer application skills with healthcare and pharmacy related software.
  • Required to assist the patient and clinic staff in every way possible to assure that the patient has access to all required pharmaceutical therapies; which may involve contacting the prescriber, the insurance company, other pharmacies and the patient.
  • Maintains all legal requirements for licensure in accordance with current Louisiana state pharmacy technician licensing along with evidence of completion of continuing education.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and organization information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Louisiana with a current pharmacy technician license in good standing.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of all pharmacy related matters and requirements for practice.
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software along with excellent organizational skills and data management.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills - advanced interpersonal communication skills to provide effective consultation and collaboration.
  • Aptitude to understand regulatory standards relating to the 340B program and pharmacy operations.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to a complex organizational environment.
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive relationships with DCHC departments and staff.
  • Ability to relate to diverse ages and demographic backgrounds.
  • Capable of exercising sound judgment and making intelligent decisions based on the information provided.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 years of community and/or retail pharmacy experience preferred but not required.
  • Specific 340B training and/or knowledge desired.
  • Certification from an accredited pharmacy technician program.
