Overview:
POSITION SUMMARY

The majority of the workload is pharmacy supply management for the entire TCRHCC Pharmacy Department. The primary knowledge and skills used will involve inventory management, procurement processes, management of automated and computerized systems and working closely with pharmacy staff and other TCRHCC staff to ensure adequate availability of medications throughout the hospital, clinics, and pharmacies. The work product directly affects the health of inpatients and outpatients. All pharmacy service is accomplished in accordance with Federal and state law, Department of the Health and Human Services Regulations, IHS requirements, and Drug Enforcement Agency regulations.

Qualifications:
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Must have high school diploma or GED
Certification:
  • Must have and maintain a current Pharmacy Technician Licensure in any state or territory of the United States.

Experience:

Must have at least three (3) years of experience working as a pharmacy technician in a hospital and/or clinic and/or other pharmacy setting.

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in the following areas:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences.
  • Articulation skills (writing and verbal)
  • Must demonstrate skills in the practical use of electronic systems and database management software.
  • Ability to manage large, complex inventories, track supply usage, project future needs, and plan supply orders accordingly.
  • Knowledge of supply trends and medical material expiration cycles is required to effectively rotate and maintain pharmaceutical material in a state of readiness.
  • Must not have any prior records of substance or drug abuse
  • Completion of and above-satisfactory scores on all job interviews, demonstrating to the satisfaction of the interviewees and TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job
  • Successful completion of and positive results from all background and reference checks, including positive employment references from authorized representatives of past and current employers demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC a record of satisfactory performance and that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

Work involves prolonged periods of standing, sitting, stooping, bending, reaching, walking, twisting, maintaining balance and reaching, frequent kneeling crouching, and occasional driving and climbing. Must have ability to carry drugs, moderate lifting of totes of drugs, charts, and boxes weighing up to 24 pounds daily and occasionally over 100lbs when necessary. Must have ability of simple grasping, firm grasping, fine manipulation of both hands and ability to use the keyboard for a prolonged amount of time. Sensory requirements include far vision, near vision, color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages and telephone use.

Mental:

Immediate response to telephone requests, verbal requests. Mental attention and assertiveness are required at all times. The ability and willingness to learn new information is an expectation. Must be able to continuously cope with high levels of stress, make decisions under high pressure, cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, manage altercations, concentrate, handle high degree of flexibility, handle multiple priorities in stressful situation, work alone, demonstrate high degree of patient, adapt to shift work, and work in areas that are close and crowded. Must be able to accept a flexible schedule to meet unit needs.

Environmental:

May continually be exposed to infectious diseases, chemical agents, dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature or humidity, hazardous or moving equipment, loud noises and occasional unprotected heights.

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Manage the drug and other supply inventories for the pharmacy department from assessment of need, preparing purchase orders and requests, managing automated ordering software processes, placing phone orders to wholesalers or prime vendors, receipt and placement of incoming orders into inventory with appropriate documentation.
  • Conduct investigations to determine causes of inventory shortages and overage.
  • Research alternative suppliers for drugs and items difficult to procure through pharmacy’s prime vendor.
  • Coordinate with other regional health care systems to procure or provide critical drugs that are needed on a short-notice basis.
  • Consider the urgency of the request for drugs when ordering so that supplies are available as needed. Items include narcotics and other items of high abuse potential.
  • Review demand data to set par levels and determine items that may be obsolete or excess to the needs of the organization, offers recommendations for utilization, and prepares reports and necessary documentation for transfer of property.
  • Responsible for the proper disposal of outdated or unserviceable pharmaceuticals in compliance with established procedures.
  • Arrange for disposition to reverse distributor or destruction of those items which are identified by TCRHCC or having exceeded shelf life in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordination with pharmacy leadership to review medication recall notices and investigate impact on pharmacy and patients.
  • Provide drug use reports, drug expenditure reports, and drug shortage reports to leadership/administration/P&T Committee on a monthly or as needed basis by using automated systems to input and catalog data and to produce reports and analysis.
  • Maintain computerized records, logs, and registers for each item to detail all transactions. Maintains up-to-date signature cards/forms for all authorized recipients. Stores items in appropriate order in approved storage areas/containers and coordinates with others to accomplish changes in locations as necessary to accommodate new items or removal of unnecessary items.
  • Coordinate with administrative services or contract personnel on any difficulties encountered in the procurement process.
  • Transfer medication from vials to the appropriate number of sterile, disposable syringes, using aseptic techniques.
  • Complete general pharmacy technician duties as assigned, including providing customer service, filling/labeling/dispensing prescriptions, and preparing inpatient medication orders and sterile IV compounds.
  • Maintain all records as requested or required by local or federal mandates, rules, and laws.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities in the Pharmacy as required by the Joint Commission that includes participation in organized staff meetings and continuing education programs as conducted by pharmacy, medical, or nursing staffs.
  • Understand characteristics of new medications/items and the operation of new equipment are taught through periodic formal training sessions.
  • Plan and complete tasks based on the established protocol or plan or accepted pharmaceutical practices. A pharmacist is available for professional guidance when required; the technician informs the supervisor of problems or unusual situations, with recommendations for appropriate action
  • Work with the lead technician and pharmacy leadership to suggest system enhancements, new business procedures & good customer service processes.
  • Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  • Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
  • Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
