Kansas Medical Center (KMC) is a fully physician owned 58 inpatient bed hospital that opened in 2006.   • Three inpatient nursing units: Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Intensive Care
  • Outpatient services including: X-Ray, CT, MRI, PET, PT, Lab, and Cardiac Rehab

Supervisory Responsibility:

Position does not have supervisory responsibilities.


Education/Training:

High School Diploma (or equivalent) required.
Must be accepted into an accredited Nursing Program to be a PCT.
Completion of basic EKG/Arrhythmia course preferred but not required.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.


Experience Required:

Previous clerical experience and CMT/cardiac experienced preferred.
Previous experience as a unit clerk and/or monitor tech in a hospital setting preferred.
Strong customer service skills required.


Position Summary:


The Patient Care Tech performs in several functions across KMC. They can be assigned clerical duties, monitor tech duties, and direct patient care duties as they have completed their competency validation for each step of the PCT program.


Essential Job Functions:

1. Performs a range of clerical duties that support the operations of the unit.
2. Acts as unit receptionist greeting and directing visitors.
3. Assists in the ordering, receipt and storage of supplies.
4. Assembles patient charts.
5. Answers unit telephone and transfers calls, determining when staff members should be paged messages forwarded.
6. Serves as an important link in the communication chain ensuring information is transmitted between nursing personnel, other hospital personnel, physicians, patients, family members and other guests.
7. Assists in entering patient information in Cerner computer system.
8. Maintains nursing station in neat and orderly manner.
9. Completes special projects for unit director, supervisors and charge nurses.
10. Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
11. Orients and mentors new staff members.
12. Cares for patients’ personal hygiene, comfort, and activities of daily living.
13. Administers treatments and perform duties as assigned in accordance with policies and procedures along with competency validation checklist completed each semester of nursing school.
14. Takes vital signs and monitors intake and output.
15. Assists the nurse or physician with patients and procedures.
16. Completes documentation as required and in accordance with policies.
17. Accurately reports patient status to assigned nurse.
18. Exercises Phlebotomy skills.
19. Accurately places cardiac monitor leads.
20. Consistently practices universal precautions.
21. Performs all duties promptly in a competent and caring manner.
22. Maintains good working relations and communication among patients, residents, and all healthcare personnel.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a typical temperature-controlled hospital environment. Work environment generally includes moderate risk of exposure to blood/ bodily fluids. Risk generally includes moderate risk of exposure to infectious disease. This position does include occupational risk of exposure to tuberculosis (Category 2). This position includes a moderate to high risk of exposure to Hepatitis B.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; occasionally required to sit for long periods of time; regularly required to stand for long periods of time; regularly required to use hands to handle, grasp, or feel objects, tools, and controls; regularly required to walk or use other means of mobility; occasionally required to reach with hands and arms above head and below waist; occasionally required to kneel, stoop, and crouch; and occasionally required to use push and pull motion. The employee must frequently be able to lift or move up to 30 pounds using proper lifting techniques. The employee is required, with or without corrective lenses, to have visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection; operation of machines; investigating and assessing; determining accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work; and to make general observations.
