Brunswick Hospital Center (BHC) is a 146-bed private, acute-care psychiatric hospital that is licensed by The New York State Office of Mental Health and accredited by The Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The role of the mental health Patient Advocate Representative for Brunswick Hospital Center is your “backer and supporter” on difficult days as you navigate mental health concerns and treatment. The role and responsibilities of the Patient Advocate are to represent your interests, point of view and rights.

While encouraging and caring about the overall care experience towards that end, our patient advocacy program is provided for you and your family regarding assistance with complaints or grievances. The roles and responsibilities of the patient advocate to represent your interest, point of view, and rights. Patients, guardians, families, friends, and significant others with whom there is consent for Brunswick staff to speak to and advocate on issues of patient rights for you without fear of repercussion.

Access to the advocate is by service area and division within Brunswick hospital via written request, telephone contact, or personal contact. When a complaint or concern is reported it will be routed to you for investigation and or review.

In this role, you will:

  • Log weekly submissions.
  • Daily priority reports and actions taken.
  • Assist with getting materials surrounding treatment, being informed of risks benefits and side effects of medication’s, treatments, procedures, and an anticipated outcomes of treatment or service (in a transparent honest way if you were requesting this information).
  • Assist with basic simple hygiene needs procurement of toiletry items, reading and leisure materials, as well as focusing your stay on recovery and resiliency within the multidisciplinary treatment team. (with the multidisciplinary treatment plan at the core and focus of your stay).
  • Pick up of materials for discharge.
  • Supplemental Tasks.
  • Unit specific assignments and Board updates with self-introductions.
  • Assistance with special investigations as assigned.
  • Help others understand if their symptoms are on more of a serious end of the spectrum and what additional modalities may be needed to help them in their recovery.
  • Assist with explanation of the patient’s rights and what will happen if they leave against medical advice.
  • Explain the benefits of them staying and seeking the treatment to assist them so one can make an informative decision regarding their own healthcare.

We require:

  • 2-5 years of proficient customer service skills
  • Bilingual; Spanish preferred
  • Excellent time and attendance record
  • Behavioral Health or related experience
  • Caring and compassionate individual
  • Demonstrated advocacy for patients
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently with follow up
  • Ability to directly speak to staff physician patients in order to achieve optimal levels of care and service while enhancing the patient stay to one of wellness, recovery and treatment
  • Familiarity with the intricate operations of the Brunswick Hospital team
  • Transparency with the main goals and objectives including understanding the organizational strategic plan
