Position Description:

Serco is currently seeking a part time (on call) Environmental Field Scientist. This is an exciting opportunity that involves Field Analytical Support (FAS) for environmental projects. The Environmental Field Scientist will assist with the performance of FAS at Superfund sites principally supporting Vibracore and Geoprobe operations, but also assisting with chemical analyses, instrument calibrations and maintenance, and data interpretation and validation as well as sample collection including shipping and preparation of chain of custodies (COCs), field decontamination of equipment.

Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division (LSASD) in Athens Georgia. Here you’ll be part of the Environmental Service Assistance Team (ESAT) helping the EPA achieve their mission to protect human health and the environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Travel to and support EPA projects at sites located within Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
  • Operate and maintain Vibracore and Geoprobe equipment.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and operate FAS instruments.
  • Provide various field analytical support including preparation of Electronic Data Deliverables (EDD).
  • Sample collection including preparation of chain of custodies (COCs), shipping to fixed laboratories, and field decontamination of equipment.
  • Prepare reagents and samples to be used in performing assays.
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for work area, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Interpret and evaluate data and upload results to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for a final report.
  • Perform review on the analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results.
  • Perform sample disposal and Laboratory clean ups for GLP practice.
  • Perform SOP review, internal audit, and corrective action when needed.
  • Monitor workflow for incoming samples and manage backlog and due dates.
  • Work independently on administrative and technical projects assigned by laboratory supervisors.
  • Manage general laboratory operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory.
  • Track inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruption of workflow.
  • Trend and monitor key performance metrics.
  • Operate other instrumentation as trained.
  • Communicate effectively with EPA staff.
Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related science discipline.
  • Four years of directly related laboratory and/or field experience.
  • Experience operating Vibracore and Geoprobe equipment required.
  • Knowledge of Scribe software used for generating COCs during sample collection.
  • Direct experience operating various field and laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Current certificates for OSHA HAZWOPER 40-Hour Course w/ annual refreshers and Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED preferable.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record and a willingness to operate a wide range of vehicles including vans and trucks.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Able to obtain a Public Trust Certificate from EPA’s Personal Security Branch
  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines.
  • A solid background in analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Good diligence and be ability to document all progress meticulously (training provided as to requirements).
  • This position is contingent on your ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to travel approximately 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required.
  • Must be able to work standing for long periods.
  • Must be able to perform field work potentially in hazardous environments.
  • Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals.
  • Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment).

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Successful applicant will need to have good attention to detail and be able to document all sampling meticulously (training will be provided as to requirements).
  • Excellent cross-functional team leadership and participation skills
  • Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills: Must be able to perform operations simultaneously and must be able to switch from task to task upon demand.
  • Ability to successfully communicate with peers, managers, and clients.
