Locations: Brooke County Public Library (Main - Wellsburg, WV)

Current hours= 14 hours total scheduled (Monday 9:45-7, Saturday 9:45-4)

These hours are to be completed at the Main location. No additional hours available unless coverage is needed at the main or Branch for other shifts during the week.

SUMMARY

The Library Clerk provides a wide variety of basic public, technical and clerical services including information and reference service, reader’s advisory, circulation services and administrative support. The library provides on the job training for certain areas and delegates some clerk tasks.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Library Director and/or the Director of Educational Programming and Head Clerk when necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All Clerks

1. Performs circulation desk duties including: a. greeting patrons, checking in and out library materials, registering new patrons

(provide guided tour and overview of services if time permits), collecting fines, processing holds and intralibrary loans, notifying patrons of both overdue and reserve books, prepare out-going materials for shipment, assist with statistical records, and answer phones, inventories, processing and maintaining materials, shelving books, clerical tasks, messenger service, correspondence and mail distribution, shifting materials, and providing notary services when applicable.

2. Maintains library public areas in a clean and orderly fashion by sustaining orderly shelves, refilling displays, occasional custodian work in the absence of a custodian, and/or organizing tasks.

3. Provides patrons help with reader’s advisory, reference questions, book reserves and requests, and other patron assistance services such as help with accessing databases, eMaterials, etc.

4. Works proficiently with basic computer software and the Automation System
5. Participates in staff meetings to discuss and resolve problems, contribute ideas for improvement and keep updated on library plans and activities.

6. Assists with special projects, events and outreach.
7. Follows, carries out, and provides overviews of library policies and procedures
8. Check personal mailbox and e-mail daily for memos and then respond accordingly
9. Fill out request slip for absence from work as well as payroll schedule and return to Secretary-Bookkeeper/Director for authorization

10. Learn, review, and maintain cash register procedures for all types of transactions
11. Learn operations of basic Internet Research.
12. Maintain general order in the library
13. Learn opening and closing procedures for computers, lighting, heating, cash register, meeting rooms, security systems, etc.

14. Distribute and receive job applications when requested or presented
15. Train new personnel/volunteers as assigned by Director
16. Know safety procedures and review password for emergency alarm system on a monthly basis

17. Notify Director of any suspicious activity inside or outside of the library environment
18. Direct reference question to the Director if unable to obtain relevant or current information on specific topics/issues for patron

19. Inform patron who would place special requests for library materials, including reference, genealogy, historical, or West Virginia non-circulating, that additional payment may be needed and/or authorization from the Director is necessary in any/all situations

20. Provide patrons meeting room applications while following correct meeting room calendar protocols; all meetings must be approved by director.

21. Assist all patrons in a caring and professional manner; do not discriminate as to age, race, sex, religion, national origin, etc.

22. Attend Staff Meetings & Trainings
23. Performs routine DVD maintenance, including numbering and labeling of disks (typically assigned to one person)

24. Performs other related duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guideline Requirements

1. High School Diploma or GED/TASC Equivalent
2. Prior library work experience preferred but not required for Library Clerk. For Head Clerk, supervisory experience is required.

3. Computer proficiency and the ability to work well with the public
4. A valid State of Federal Photo ID is required
5. Knowledge of the community in which the library is located and an understanding of the nature of libraries and who it serves is helpful.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED

Must have computer and peripherals knowledge and/or ability to learn. Ability to use a copy machine, fax machine, telephone, printers, scanners and various audio visual equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a library setting and in close proximity to other workers. Incumbent shall be exposed to those conditions normally encountered in a library environment. Physical demands are moderate, consisting primarily of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting and carrying moderately heavy boxes of books up to 25 pounds and utilizing a hand dolly/book truck for heavier loads. Staff will be provided with ladders/step stools to safely reach higher stacks and supplies. Incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with staff and patrons. Incumbent must have the stamina to work long hours and overtime, if assigned, and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts.

Head Clerks and Full Time Clerks work 40 hours a week, whereas Part Time Clerks range from permanent temp (no scheduled hours) to under 39 hours a week.

All new or rehired employees work on an introductory basis for the first 90 calendar days after their date of hire. New employees are given an introductory period which is designed as an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to achieve satisfactory performance levels on the job, and to determine if the position meets their expectations. BCPL uses this period to assess employee capabilities, work habits and overall performance. Either the employee or BCPL may end the employment relationship at any time during the introductory period.
