GENERAL DESCRIPTION

NOTE: Temporary position contingent upon funding with fluctuating full-time/part-time hours based on operational needs.

Under the direction of the Farm Manager, this position is responsible for routine (journey-level) operations in a state park including providing interpretation and preservation of the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm and other park special events, programs, and outreach. The unique historic facility portrays the lifestyles of a typical German farm family in eastern Gillespie County at the turn-of-the-century (1915-1918) in an authentic farm setting involving 3rd person interpretation. Provides living history demonstrations to the public by using a variety of artifacts and/or replicas, interprets life on the farm using appropriate methods in relationship to the area, and gives interpretive tours on a daily basis. Provides excellent customer service through daily interpretation for the general public and school groups. Dresses in authentic costume, cares for farm livestock, maintains and cleans historic buildings, maintains park and farm grounds, and performs routine facility maintenance on historic structures and equipment. Assists with outreach and educational programs for all ages. Other duties include assisting with park promotions, park volunteers, and safety program. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from High School or GED.


Experience:

Licensure:

If driving is required, applicant must possess a valid State driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Experience working with the public;

Experience in park interpretation and continuing education programs;

Experience in natural and/or cultural resource management;

Experience working with livestock.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of natural and cultural resources;

Knowledge of special event implementation;

Knowledge of general facility and grounds maintenance related to historic sites, buildings, park grounds and farms areas;

Knowledge of basic mathematics;

Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

Skill in planning, organizing and implementing public presentations and guided tours for various age groups;

Skill in effective interpretive techniques, program preparation and presentations;

Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment;

Skill in working with livestock such as milk cows, swine, sheep, chickens, and all associated farm animals;

Ability to work as a member of a team;

Ability to work well with diverse groups and age ranges;

Ability to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration or customer service duties as needed;

Ability to demonstrate various historic living history activities effectively and properly to the public using a variety of artifacts, replicas, and related techniques;

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position contingent upon funding;

Required to work in a public park;

Required to work 10 to 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Hours may be reduced or extended as needed;

Required to adjust to changing schedules;

Required to work overtime as necessary;

This position may fluctuate between part-time and full-time status throughout the term of employment. Changing from part-time to full-time and vice versa may impact the amount of leave accrued and health insurance rates;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

May be required to travel up to 5% with possible overnight stays;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
