BACKGROUND:

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. Founded in 2007, NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful

movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women, and Black women.

NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country. Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 70 affiliate organizations, and local chapters developed by NDWA. To date, the Alliance comprises more than 250,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in all 50 states.

Position Summary:

Our NC NDWA organizing project was formed in late 2016 in Durham, NC and has expanded to form additional chapters in Raleigh, Charlotte, Fayetteville, and Greensboro. The NC organizing project is hiring an organizer to help expand our organizing strategy to build a voice for Black domestic workers and other care workers across the state. The overarching goals of our NC work includes:

  • Growing a network of Black domestic workers who can lead within a movement for a new economy and a new democracy

  • Exploring new partnerships that can increase fertile ground for powerful victories for domestic workers

  • Cultivate a multi-city network of grassroots and labor partner organizations

  • Build leadership and increase the skill set of emerging black leaders and to uplift and address the issues faced by Black communities

  • Develop, execute, and implement campaigns to raise standards for direct care and child care workers across the state

  • Raise the visibility of domestic workers in North Carolina and serve as the main organizing vehicle for the tens of thousands of direct care and child care workers in the state

  • Build a politically engaged base of domestic workers to help cultivate environment needed to deliver on our movement’s priorities and positively impact the lives of domestic workers locally and nationally

The NC Organizer plays a key role in building power for Black and other domestic workers across NC and growing capacity across chapters. The NC Organizer will grow NC’s membership and membership engagement. The NC Organizer is responsible for chapter growth through list building, canvassing, digital outreach, strong 1-on-1s and follow-up, mobilizing members to participate in chapter work, and innovating projects and cultivating relationships that support chapter growth and goals.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage in daily base building activities and membership recruitment across various chapters in the state through digital and in-person outreach

  • Represent the NC organizing team and conduct outreach at external community events that serve as recruitment opportunities

  • Build relationships with partner organizations and institutions to support membership recruitment and growth of membership base

  • Engage existing membership in monthly activities and conduct regular membership engagement communication to ensure high levels of membership participation

  • Aid members in conducting their own membership recruitment activities and supporting them to hold their own turf

  • Support in executing membership engagement activities as related to campaign implementation

  • Assist in facilitation of membership programs that include (but not limited to) monthly membership meetings, political education workshops, and other leadership development activities

  • Conduct daily tracking of field activities and maintain accurate records of membership recruitment and engagement in appropriate systems

  • Attend supervision meetings and complete work plans and reports in a timely manner

  • Participate in staff meetings, staff studies, and staff retreats

  • Attend conferences and other professional development opportunities related to position

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience as a domestic worker a plus;

  • Knowledge of issues affecting Black domestic workers nationally and locally;

  • Demonstrated commitment to NDWA-NC a plus, including involvement in the organization in leadership positions such as the Leads Committee, Embolden Fellowship program, Base Building Fellowship Programs, or Child Care/Home Care Action Groups;

  • 1-3 years of organizing experience within and/or beyond NDWA-NC, such as work in a staff or volunteer capacity with a community or labor organization ;

  • Highly motivated individual with a passion for engaging communities;

  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members;

  • Hard-working and self-disciplined;

  • Ability to work well with a team and motivate others to take action;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures;

  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently;

  • Strong facilitation skills;

  • Ability to work evenings and some weekends;

  • Strong and effective communicator;

  • Basic computer skills: (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite);
