Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This is a rare opportunity to join a boutique, eight-person investment firm based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, #26 in US News top 150 places to live. We manage $375M in assets for approximately 200 high net worth families and embrace personal balance to foster full and rewarding lives. With one of the lowest client-to-advisor ratios in the industry, we think smaller is better. We know our client families well and take pride in our average 15-year relationship tenure with 99% annual retention. Our clients work hard to have the money they entrust to us. We take care of their investments like we would want someone to take care of our own and hold dear our commitment to act in a client’s best interest.

Do you enjoy rolling up your sleeves and doing the work? Do you like using spreadsheets and software to meet deadlines ahead of schedule? Are you energized by promotions based on merit? Mix of base and generous bonus? Listen as much as you talk? Then we want to get to know you.

This position is intended to be:

  • 50% Trading execution, book-level portfolio monitoring
  • 30% Operations metrics reporting, analysis
  • 20% Process improvement, vendor relationship management

The right candidate will act like an owner. Notice and communicate when systems aren't working. Genuinely help out to make your colleagues more successful. Own the client-facing trades as if you were handling your own money.

POSITION FUNCTIONS:

Trading Operations

Execute daily trading. Mostly block trading as needed across approximately a thousand accounts primarily in ETF’s, some securities, and hedged equity (structured notes). Use existing audit workflows in our trading software (Orion), at the custodian (Fidelity’s Wealthscape) and in Microsoft Excel to increasingly automate portfolio audits. Outcomes of your daily work increased the accuracy and ensure investments align with client goals (think client cash balances match anticipated upcoming withdrawal needs, etc.). Success will require intermediate Microsoft Excel skills; proficiency in understanding retail investments, the financial industry, and experience with trading software. Once onboarded, you’ll be involved in vendor discussions to help propose how to modify components in our tech stack to improve (we are currently in discussions to migrate to Black Diamond). The right candidate will be detail-oriented, naturally curious, empathetic to client needs first, and enjoy continuous process improvement.

Investment Process

Own the due diligence process for investments in the model portfolio, support allocation and benchmark data gathering, maintain and improve the internal model menu to match client goals with portfolio recommendations. We are evidence-based investors with a primary focus on efficient beta, some factors, and experienced with hedged equity. We avoid alts and private equity at this asset level. You’ll use existing workflows to prep and facilitate the monthly investment committee meeting along with executing investment compliance documentation responsibilities. Potential for client-facing interaction.

Internal metrics reporting and analysis

Meet weekly with our leader, Josh, to help the team work smarter, not harder. Use existing workflows to capture, report, and analyze internal metrics across departments. Think % of client emails responded within service standards or % of deliverables on track for a project. As you help identify new processes or improvements to existing workflows, you’ll benefit from a desire to setup others for success and the ability to effectively communicate. Welcome and help train new team members as needed.

Vendor Management

This role will engage with external tech and investment vendors to stay current in the marketplace and research the best options to power up our business. You’ll interact weekly with wholesalers along with our existing investment vendors to always be proud of what we’re using.

Keeping projects on deadline and managing how all parties/technologies, etc. integrate will be critical. Manage current vendors to ensure expectations and functionality is consistent with our needs. Build strong, respectful relationships with external partners supporting our business.
